Senshi ☆ Dub vs. Original

Konnichiwa, and welcome! I'm Michelle Parrish, I'm 19, and I'm a freshman in college near Seattle. I found Sailor Moon the way most American fans did: flipping channels on a weekday morning in 1995, and stopping because a girl with blond pigtails was crying louder than anyone I had ever heard. I was fifteen. I was hooked in about four minutes. Four years, one anime club, a stack of subtitled tapes and a very patient roommate later, here is my shrine. This page is about the girls (and the cats, and the guy in the tuxedo). My other page is about the question every Moonie gets asked sooner or later: dub, or the original? Names below are Japanese / English dub, because I'm not going to pick sides on the front page. (I pick sides on the other page.)

Tsukino Usagi / Serena SAILOR MOON ☾ the Princess Fourteen, late for school every single day, bad at tests, great at eating and at the video games at the Crown arcade. A crybaby. And the one who never, ever gives up on anybody, not even her enemies. That's the whole secret of the show: the hero isn't the strongest or the smartest. She's the one with the biggest heart. Voiced by Kotono Mitsuishi in Japan and Terri Hawkes in the dub. Her guardian is Luna, a black cat with a crescent moon on her forehead.

Mizuno Ami / Amy SAILOR MERCURY The genius. Top scores in the whole country, wants to be a doctor like her mother, carries a little computer that can analyze anything. Shy, and so kind. Everybody I know who was the smart quiet girl in school has a soft spot for Ami. (Hi. It's me.)

Hino Rei / Raye SAILOR MARS A priestess at the Hikawa Shrine (Cherry Hill Temple in the dub), with real psychic powers and a temper to match. She and Usagi fight constantly, and would die for each other. Fun fact: in the manga Rei is cool and serious, and the anime made her much more of a hothead. I love both versions.

Kino Makoto / Lita SAILOR JUPITER The tall new girl who got kicked out of her last school for fighting. Can flip a grown man. Also the best cook in the group, loves flowers, and dreams of opening her own shop someday. Every cute boy reminds her of her old sempai (in the dub, an old boyfriend). My roommate's favorite.

Aino Minako / Mina SAILOR VENUS She was fighting evil as Sailor V before any of the others woke up, with her own cat, Artemis. Loves volleyball and wants to be a pop idol. Mixes up her proverbs constantly. Takes her job as the leader of the princess's guard very seriously underneath all the goofiness.

Chiba Mamoru / Darien TUXEDO KAMEN / TUXEDO MASK Shows up in a tuxedo and a cape, throws a rose, gives a little speech, and leaves. Usagi can't stand him in regular life at first. You can guess how that goes.

And more... Chibiusa / Rini, the pink-haired little girl who falls out of the sky in the second season. I won't spoil who she is, in case you haven't made it to the end of the second season yet. The Outer Senshi: Haruka (Uranus), Michiru (Neptune), Setsuna (Pluto) and Hotaru (Saturn). Pluto turns up in the second season, but the others arrive in the third season, "S," which hasn't been shown in the U.S. yet. If you only know the dub, you are in for such a treat someday. Haruka and Michiru are my favorite couple in all of anime.

Sailor Moon was created by Naoko Takeuchi. The anime belongs to Toei Animation, and the English version to DIC. I don't own any of it, I just love it.
