Every buy and sale, January 1 to September 18, 1999

<< Back to Saturday Money  |  Mistakes I've Made

This is the book. I keep it in a green columnar pad from the office supply store, in pencil, and on Sunday nights I type it in here. Every line is something I bought in 1999, in the order I bought it, with what I paid, when it sold and what it sold for. If it hasn't sold, it says where it is. Dates are month/day.

A few things so you can read it:

  • Where: Flea = the Saturday flea market at the county fairgrounds (indoors in the winter, out in the lot from April on). G-sale = garage sale. Estate = estate sale. Auction = farm or household auction. Rummage = church rummage sale. Thrift = thrift store.
  • Lots: When I buy a box lot or a bunch of something for one price, I split the cost over the pieces as best I can, so you'll see a $10 bunch turn into five lines at $2. Kitchen smalls (egg beaters, cookie cutters, measuring cups, can openers) I sell by the piece and close out the line when the last one goes.
  • A star (*) on the sold date: sold outside the mall, so the mall didn't get its 10%.
  • What isn't in here: gas, coffee, donuts, the truck, my time, or the Saturday mornings Sheila didn't get to sleep in. She says all of those belong in the book. She is probably right, and they're not going in.

These were in the booth on New Year's Day. They're counted at what I paid for them in 1998.

THE BOOTH, MONTH BY MONTH

Rent is $85 a month for my 8 by 10, paid on the first. The mall keeps 10% of what sells and mails me a check for the rest on the 10th of the next month, with a printout of every tag. That printout is how I fill in the "Sold" column. September is through the 18th, and I've counted the whole month's rent.

THE YEAR SO FAR

Two ways to look at it. The first is what I made on the things that sold. The second is just cash: what went into the coffee can and what came out of it.

Sold, 1999 buys (54 lines, counting the Avon bottles at $0)1,827.00
Sold, 1998 leftovers (5 lines)116.00
TOTAL TAKEN IN1,943.00
Less what those things cost me(336.00)
Gross profit1,607.00
Less booth rent, 9 months at $85(765.00)
Less the mall's 10%(187.50)
NET PROFIT, JAN. 1 TO SEPT. 18654.50

Taken in1,943.00
Paid out for everything bought in 1999(394.00)
Paid out to the mall (rent and 10%)(952.50)
CASH AHEAD FOR THE YEAR596.50
Still in the booth or garage, at cost (16 lines)73.00

So that's $654.50 in profit for the year so far, or about $73 a month. Sheila worked it out per hour once and I asked her not to do it again. The way I look at it, I'd be out there anyway. This way the hobby pays for itself and then some, and the Christmas fund is already started.

Best buy of the year: the red Fiesta disc pitcher in May, $15 at a garage sale, sold for $110. Worst: the Philco radio, which you can read about on the Mistakes page.
