THE COUNTDOWN
2
days until season five

Season four ended in May with The Ides of March. Julius Caesar got what history says he got, and Xena and Gabrielle ended up on crosses, side by side, and then the screen went dark and the summer started. I have never been so angry at a television in my life. Tina, our shortstop, watched it at my apartment and had to go sit on the back steps for a while.

Four months later, season five starts the week of Monday, September 27. Since the show is sold station by station, it lands on a different night in different towns; ours runs it on the weekend, so the people back East will know before I do. I am going to stay off the Internet for three days, which for me is the hardest thing on this page.

I've heard the rumors about how they get out of it. I'm not printing any of them. Some of them are probably even true. I'd rather find out the way I found out everything else for four years: on my couch, with a bowl of popcorn, and my dog Bard watching me yell.

Seven Episodes

Not the seven best, necessarily. The seven I'd hand to somebody who'd never seen the show, in the order they aired. No summaries; you should see them for yourself. Just why.

I Callisto (season 1)
Hudson Leick's first episode, and the first time the show made Xena pay for her past instead of just talking about it. Everything after starts here.
II Destiny (season 2)
Xena's past with Julius Caesar, and how she became what she became. Watch it again before the season five premiere, and you'll see why I've been sick to my stomach all summer.
III The Xena Scrolls (season 2)
The 1940s, a dig in Macedonia, and Lucy Lawless as a Southern lady scholar. Pure silliness, and Ted Raimi is wonderful in it. Where my page title comes from, partly.
IV A Day in the Life (season 2)
One ordinary day on the road: chores, a bath, a fish, a bickering match, a giant. The funniest episode they ever made, and the best one about what those two are like when nobody's trying to kill them.
V The Debt (season 3, two parts)
Xena's past in the land of Chin and the woman who tried to teach her another way. Gorgeous to look at, and the hardest test their friendship ever took.
VI The Bitter Suite (season 3)
The musical. Yes, a musical, in the middle of the darkest stretch the show ever ran, and it's how they find their way back to each other. Half my team thinks I'm crazy for this one. The other half cried.
VII One Against an Army (season 3)
Gabrielle is badly hurt, a Persian army is coming, and Xena has one night to hold them off and keep her friend alive. Small cast, hardly any sets, and the best hour of television I saw that year.

Nothing from season four made the seven, though The Ides of March came close, for reasons that will be obvious. Ask me again in May.
