| CASE FILE: MY RULES |
|
These are the original series, the yellow hardcovers, numbers 1 through 56. Most of mine came from my grandmother and my mother, and the rest from the library and yard sales. I'm missing fifteen and I'm hunting for them. The newer paperbacks are fine, but these are the real ones to me. I rate each one from one to five stars. My opinions don't give away any endings. I would never. ★★★★★ = couldn't put it down · ★★★ = good, but not one I'd read twice |
| #1 | The Secret of the Old Clock Where it all starts: a missing will, a family of snobs who don't deserve the money, and Nancy already brave on page one. ★★★★★ |
| #2 | The Hidden Staircase An old mansion that might be haunted. Read it at night with a flashlight, the way I did. ★★★★★ |
| #3 | The Bungalow Mystery Starts fast and never slows down. One of the best openings in the series. ★★★★★ |
| #4 | The Mystery at Lilac Inn Lots of suspects and lots of running around. Good, not great. ★★★★★ |
| #5 | The Secret of Shadow Ranch Arizona and a ranch, and it's where Bess and George first come into the series. Important! ★★★★★ |
| #6 | The Secret of Red Gate Farm I got a little lost in the middle. The ending is good. ★★★★★ |
| #7 | The Clue in the Diary Ned Nickerson's first appearance. Amber made me mark the page. ★★★★★ |
| #8 | Nancy's Mysterious Letter A letter that wasn't meant for her. A very clever setup. ★★★★★ |
| #9 | The Sign of the Twisted Candles Gloomy and old-fashioned in a good way. ★★★★★ |
| #10 | The Password to Larkspur Lane A pigeon brings the first clue. I love the pigeon. ★★★★★ |
| #11 | The Clue of the Broken Locket Fine, but I guessed too much too early. ★★★★★ |
| #12 | The Message in the Hollow Oak Outdoorsy. Afterward I checked every hollow tree in the park. ★★★★★ |
| #13 | The Mystery of the Ivory Charm One of the best titles in the series, and the book lives up to it. ★★★★★ |
| #15 | The Haunted Bridge Spooky title, less spooky book. ★★★★★ |
| #16 | The Clue of the Tapping Heels The tapping noises are the best part. ★★★★★ |
| #18 | The Mystery at the Moss-Covered Mansion More action than usual. Nancy hardly sits down. ★★★★★ |
| #19 | The Quest of the Missing Map Maps and treasure. Hard to go wrong. ★★★★★ |

| #21 | The Secret in the Old Attic Attics are always good for a mystery. ★★★★★ |

| #56 | The Thirteenth Pearl Japan, and the last of the yellow hardcovers on my shelf. A perfect one to end on. ★★★★★ |

Numbers 14, 17, 22, 24, 26, 27, 28, 32, 34, 40, 42, 46, 48, 50 and 54. If you see any of these at a yard sale, please buy it for me. (Just kidding. Mostly.) By the numbers: 41 books read. Nine got five stars, twenty-three got four, and nine got three. Nothing has gotten one or two stars yet, and I don't think anything will. |
