THE WAITING ROOM
everything Clan Soulstone knows, hopes and suspects about Diablo II
back to Clan Soulstone

We have been waiting for Diablo II for a long time. When we started this clan, some of us thought it might be out for Christmas of 1998. Then we thought it would be this year. Now the word is that it will be sometime in 2000. Every time the date slips, Gravewright makes a new character in the original out of spite.

We are not complaining. (We are complaining a little.) Blizzard took its time with the first one and the first one is still the best thing any of us have ever played on a computer. Take the time. Just not too much time.

What We Know

This is what's been shown and written about so far, as far as we can tell from the magazines and the news sites. Some of it may change before the box is on the shelf.

  • Five new classes. The Amazon, the Necromancer, the Barbarian, the Sorceress and the Paladin. None of the three originals come back as playable classes.
  • Four acts, each in a different part of the world, instead of one long trip down under one church. There are towns, and outdoor areas you walk across between them.
  • More loot. Everything we've read says there will be more kinds of magic items to hunt than in the first game. Thornfield has already started a notebook for them, which is empty.
  • A different Battle.net. From what we've read, characters can be kept on Blizzard's own computers instead of ours, so nobody can edit them. If that's true, it's the best news we've heard in two years.

Who's Playing What

We took a poll at the last clan meeting. Nobody is held to it.

VesperSorceress. Obviously.
GravewrightBarbarian, and then all four of the others.
ThornfieldAmazon
AshcandleNecromancer
HalbrandPaladin
MirethAmazon
OldgrimBarbarian
LanternjawNecromancer ("I've always wanted pets")
SableSorceress
WickettPaladin

Two Sorceresses, two Amazons, two Barbarians, two Necromancers, two Paladins. We didn't plan that. It happened. Gravewright says it's a sign.

Our Plan for Launch Day

  1. Everybody takes the day off. (Oldgrim has already asked his boss. His boss asked what day. Oldgrim said he'd let him know.)
  2. Nobody plays alone the first night. We start together, in the same game, at level one, like we did in 1997.
  3. We keep the [Soul] tag and the Law of the Clan. Everything else is new.
  4. We keep our Diablo characters, too. We aren't deleting anything. Those characters stood in front of Diablo together.

If you know something we don't, or you have news from a magazine we haven't seen, please write. We check every day. Some of us check twice.
