| STOP. This page has spoilers for the end of Silent Hill. If you haven't finished it yet, please don't scroll down. take me back to the front page |
|
There are four regular endings and one joke ending. The four regular ones come down to two things you do, or don't do, late in the game. Most people get the worst one the first time, because neither thing is obvious. I did. I sat there in the dark after the credits and didn't move for a long time. Then I started over. |
| Thing one: Cybil |
|
At the amusement park, on the merry-go-round, Cybil turns on you. She isn't herself anymore. You can fight her, and if you do, you'll win, and she'll die, and you'll feel terrible, which I think is the point. Or you can save her. Back in the hospital there's an item the game calls Unknown Liquid, a strange red liquid. It's easy to miss, and getting it takes a little more effort than most items. If you have it when you reach the merry-go-round, don't shoot. Get close to Cybil and use the liquid on her instead. It frees her. I missed it on my first two tries. If you're in the hospital and you haven't found it, keep looking before you move on. |
| Thing two: Kaufmann |
|
In the resort area, Dr. Kaufmann is up to something. If you're thorough, you'll find something of his at the bar, and it leads you to a store, and the store leads you to the motel, and at the end of the trail you find out what he's been hiding. None of it is required to finish the game. All of it changes the ending. It also changes the very last fight. If you get stuck on this errand: look at everything twice, and remember that the motel has more than one way to get things done. |
| How they add up |
| Saved Cybil? | Finished Kaufmann's errand? | Ending |
| No | No | Bad |
| No | Yes | Bad+ |
| Yes | No | Good |
| Yes | Yes | Good+ |
| The fifth, the UFO ending, has nothing to do with either. See below. |
| What they're like I'm still not going to describe them. You should see them. Just how they felt. |
| Bad | The last image made me go back over the whole game in my head and wonder what any of it had been. It's the one I think about most. It's also the saddest thing I've ever seen in a video game, and I've seen Aeris. |
| Bad+ | More of the story makes sense, and there's a little light at the end. Not much. The plus endings explain things the plain ones only hint at, so if you only ever see one plus ending, you've missed half the story. |
| Good | Harry doesn't leave alone. I cried, but the good kind. |
| Good+ | The whole story, or as much of it as the game will ever tell you. This is the one I'd call the real ending. Kaufmann gets what's coming to him. |
| UFO | A joke ending, and it's funny exactly because the rest of the game is so serious. You can't get it the first time through. It takes an item you can only find on a replay, used in the right places around town. The Next Fear page has a little more. All I'll say is that after six endings of crying in the dark, I laughed so hard my mom knocked on my door. |
|
My seven times through: Bad. Bad again, because I didn't believe it. Good, once I knew about Cybil. Bad+, on purpose, to see the difference. Good+. UFO. And Good+ one more time, for a better ranking, with the lights off and headphones on, the way it should be played. If you've got a theory about what really happened to Harry, especially in the Bad ending, write me. I have three and I can't decide. |
