SITH HAPPENS
the Darth Maul page  //  by DarthEvan

Welcome, young apprentice. You have found the darkest corner of Area51. This is a page about the coolest villain in the history of Star Wars (yes I said it, and yes I know about Vader, I have the whole original trilogy on tape and I have watched it more times than you).

My name is Evan. I'm 15 and I live in Michigan. I have seen Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace seven times in the theater since it came out on May 19. The first time was a midnight showing with my older brother and I didn't sleep. By the fourth time my mom stopped giving me money for it so the last three came out of my lawn mowing money. Totally worth it.

(My mom says the title of this page is "borderline." It stays. Sith. S-I-T-H. It's in the movie.)

WHY MAUL RULES
  1. He barely talks. He has like three lines in the whole movie and he is still the scariest guy in it. That is called presence. Jar Jar talks the entire time and look where it got him (see below).
  2. The double-bladed lightsaber. When he lights up the second blade in the hangar I heard a guy behind me yell. I think it was me.
  3. The face. Red and black tattoos all over, yellow eyes, and the little horns. My little sister had to leave the room during the commercial.
  4. He takes on two Jedi at once. By himself. And he's winning for most of it.
  5. No mercy, no speeches. He doesn't stand around explaining his plan like a Bond villain. He shows up, he fights, he leaves.

THE GUY UNDER THE MAKEUP
Darth Maul is played by Ray Park, who is a martial artist from Scotland who grew up in London. He's been doing kung fu and wushu since he was a little kid and he does all those spins and flips himself. That's why the fight looks so real compared to the old movies where they kind of bonk the sabers together slowly. (No offense Obi-Wan the first. I still love you.)

Fun fact that everybody at my school argued about: the voice is not Ray Park. Maul's voice was dubbed by a different actor, Peter Serafinowicz. I looked it up in the credits on my third viewing. I had to sit through the whole end music which is not a problem because it's John Williams.

I read that Ray Park spent hours in the makeup chair every day getting the face done. I tried to do the face with my sister's Halloween makeup kit and it took 40 minutes and I looked like a very angry ladybug. I'm going to practice before October 31.

MY FIVE FAVORITE MAUL MOMENTS
5. The hologram scenes with Darth Sidious. Just standing there in the dark with his hood up. Creepy in a good way.

4. Tatooine, when he jumps off the speeder bike and goes straight at Qui-Gon. Best surprise attack ever.

3. The hangar doors opening and he's just waiting there. Chills. Every time.

2. The energy walls in the generator room. Qui-Gon kneels down to meditate and Maul just paces back and forth like a tiger. I could watch that part forever.

1. The whole Duel of the Fates fight, start to finish. Best lightsaber fight ever filmed. I will not be taking questions.

IS HE REALLY DEAD???
Okay. Yes, Obi-Wan cuts him in half and he falls down the big shaft. BUT:
  • Nobody sees him land.
  • This is Star Wars. Luke fell down a shaft in Empire and he was fine.
  • Sith are supposed to be powered by anger. If anybody is angry enough to survive being cut in half it's this guy.
My friend Marco says I'm in denial. My brother says the next movie is going to be about Anakin growing up so Maul won't be in it. I say we'll see. MAUL LIVES (in my heart at least).

MY MAUL COLLECTION
• Darth Maul action figure (still in the package, not opening it, ever)
• The big Maul poster with the face, over my bed. My mom hates it.
• Pepsi can with Maul on it. Unopened. It's on my shelf next to the figure.
• The Phantom Menace novel by Terry Brooks (the fight is even better in the book, sort of)
• The soundtrack CD. Track 2 (Duel of the Fates) wore out my sister's patience in about a week.
• A red flashlight taped to a black flashlight. Don't laugh.

WANT LIST: a real toy double-bladed saber, the Maul mask for Halloween, and a scanner so I can put pictures on here. Right now the scanner at the library is the only one I can use and they said "no personal projects." So it's text only for now. Use your imagination. Red. Black. Horns. You get it.

Star Wars and Darth Maul belong to Lucasfilm Ltd. and George Lucas. I don't own them, I just think about them a lot.
