Riven
The Library  ·  Myst  ·  Riven

First Days · Counting · The Moiety · Gehn · Catherine · The Signal · The Marbles

Riven is a different animal from Myst. There are no tidy Ages with one puzzle each. It's one world, five islands, and everything connects to everything else. So these hints aren't in the order you'll meet them. They're in the order you'll need them.

I've kept the hidden answers shorter than on the Myst page. Riven is the kind of game where half the pleasure is realizing you've been walking past the answer for a week.

First Days

Nudge. You lose something important in the first few minutes. Don't reload. It's supposed to happen.

Push. Explore Temple Island all the way before you worry about anything else. The room that turns will make you dizzy. Draw it.

The little cars that run between the islands are your friends. Ride every one. Pay attention to where the rails go even when you can't get there yet.

Learning to Count

Nudge. You'll see odd little symbols on machines all over Riven. They are numbers.

Push. Somebody on Jungle Island teaches the village children to count. Find where they go to school.

Answer, highlight to read:
The D'ni count by twenty-fives, not tens. The toy in the schoolroom shows you the numbers one after another. Copy every one into your notebook. It's a grim little toy, and you'll need every number it shows you before the end.

The Moiety

Nudge. Not everyone on Riven works for Gehn.

Push. The rebels are harder to find than Gehn's people, and they are very careful about strangers. Look for what they've hidden, and don't assume a wall is only a wall.

Answer, highlight to read:
When the Moiety take you to their Age, go along quietly. They have the thing you lost at the very beginning, and they'll give it back once they decide to trust you.

Gehn

Nudge. Gehn is Atrus's father, and a better talker than either of his grandsons. Read his journals, if you can get into his rooms. He writes like a man who is sure he's right.

Push. He won't trust the book you bring him. You have to show him that you do.

Answer, highlight to read:
When Gehn asks you to go into the book first, do it. It feels exactly like the wrong thing to do. Wait. When he checks the book himself, the two of you trade places, and he is the one caught.

Catherine

Nudge. Catherine is being held on an island of her own.

Push. Deal with Gehn first. The way to her is among his things.

Answer, highlight to read:
Once Gehn is caught, go back through his rooms slowly and look at everything again. She isn't far, once you know where to look.

The Signal

Nudge. Atrus is waiting for you to tell him it's time. Somewhere on Riven there's a telescope pointed down into the Star Fissure.

Push. The order matters more than anything else in the game.

Answer, highlight to read:
Gehn caught, Catherine free, and only then the signal. Open the telescope's hatch and lower the telescope all the way down until it breaks the glass. Signal too early and you'll see one of the sad endings.

The Marbles

The colored marbles are the hardest puzzle in either game, and I won't hide an answer to it here, even in a box. Here is the most I'll say on a web page:

Nudge. Everything you need is already in your notebook, or on a map you've already looked at.

Push. The grid is a map too.

If you've tried for a week and you're ready to throw the fifth disc out the window, write to me and ask twice. I'll answer the second time.
