Welcome Aboard
Indian River Virtual Airlines is a club of flight simulator pilots who fly a real schedule out of Melbourne International (KMLB) and Orlando International (KMCO) in Microsoft Flight Simulator 98. You fly the routes on your own computer, whenever you like, and send in a pilot report when you land. Your hours add up, you move up in rank, and you get to fly bigger airplanes. There are no dues and no age limit. There are, however, standards. We fly by the numbers here.

09/21/99 · Back in business after Floyd. Apologies for the silence last week. Hurricane Floyd came up the coast on the 14th and 15th and the Chief Pilot's computer spent two days unplugged in the hall closet while the Chief Pilot spent two days at his sister's in Orlando. Floyd stayed offshore, thank God. We had wind, a lot of rain and a neighbor's fence in the yard, and that's all. My thoughts go out to everyone up in the Carolinas who got the worst of it. PIREPs from the 13th through the 19th are all logged now. If yours is missing, e-mail me.

09/04/99 · New route. IRV 410, Vero Beach to Nassau, is open to all pilots in the Cessna 182S. Two hours over open water. File a flight plan, check your fuel, and watch that crosswind at Nassau.

07/30/99 · About the next version. Several pilots have asked what we'll do when the new Flight Simulator comes out later this year. Answer: we'll wait until most of our pilots have computers that can run it, and then we'll talk. Until then IRV flies FS98.

Join IRV
All you need is Flight Simulator 98 and an e-mail address. To apply, send an e-mail to the Chief Pilot with your name (first name and last initial is fine), where you live, how long you've been flying the sim, and which hub you'd like, KMLB or KMCO. I'll send back your pilot ID within a few days. New pilots start as First Officers in the Cessna 182S and the JetRanger. See the fleet page for how ranks and aircraft work.
Filing a PIREP
After each flight, e-mail a pilot report to [email protected] with "PIREP" in the subject. Please use this layout so I can log them quickly:
PIREP
Pilot ID: IRV014
Flight: IRV101
Aircraft: B737-400
From: KMLB
To: KATL
Block time: 1.4

Block time is in hours and tenths, from pushback to parking. Be honest. Slewing, time compression and pausing to answer the phone and then forgetting for two hours all don't count as flying. Crashes don't get logged, and we will not ask about them.
From the Chief Pilot
I'm Gene Hubbell, IRV001. I spent twenty-two years on the ground at the Cape as an electrical technician, watching things leave the ground without me. I've been flying Microsoft's simulator since the days when the scenery was mostly green squares, and I started IRV in June 1998 with three friends from a flight sim newsgroup. We're up to seventeen pilots in four countries now. Blue skies to all of you.
