except i took out last names. newest ones are on top. keep sending them.
cody (9/23/99) I'm at basic training right now and my mom is typing this from my letter. Derek let me borrow the Boat for prom when my truck broke down. He made me promise to put gas in it and to "treat her like a lady." I did. Miss you man. his band director (9/5/99) Allison, thank you for this page. Derek was the most enthusiastic student I've had in twenty-two years of teaching. He used to stay after rehearsal to ask me how I'd pick a halftime show, what I'd do about a weak section, how you get freshmen to march in step. He was already thinking like a teacher. We started marching season this fall with his initials sewn on the sleeve of every uniform. The band voted on it. I didn't have to say a word. marissa (8/19/99) he taught me to drive stick in the church parking lot junior year and never once yelled even when i stalled it like forty times. who does that?? brett (8/2/99) Third trumpet here. Derek let me play his part on the last song at the spring concert in 11th grade because my parents were there and I never got a solo. He just handed me the music and sat back. I didn't find out till later that his grandma had driven two hours to hear him play it. brianna (7/11/99) the parrot shirt!!!!! he wore it to the band banquet with a TIE. i have never laughed so hard in my life. allie i'm so glad you made this. derek's mom (6/20/99) Allie, honey, your mother showed me this on her computer and I read it three times. Thank you. You were always his favorite clarinet, even when you were passing him notes about how bad the trumpets sounded. The Hawaiian shirt is hanging in his closet. None of us can move it either. Please come see us when you're home. We love you. tanisha (6/2/99) i didn't know derek that well, i transferred in junior year. but on my first day he saw me eating lunch by myself and came over and sat down and talked about star trek for 25 minutes. i don't even like star trek. by the end of lunch i had like six friends. that was him. allison (5/30/99) the first one. the night before our senior band concert, we were the last two in the band room, and he said he was nervous about his solo. i said he'd be fine. he said "you always say that." he was fine. i was right. he never got to hear me say i told you so. so: i told you so, derek. got a story?
