Cleveland Indians 1995
100-44 · Central Division Champs · American League Champs
IN THE WORLD SERIES FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1954!

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27: WE'RE STILL ALIVE!!! Indians 5, Braves 4 last night at the Jake. Albert hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Orel beat Maddux. That makes it Braves 3 games, Indians 2. Game 6 is tomorrow night in Atlanta, Dennis Martinez against Glavine. Two more wins. That's all. Two more. Every game is on the World Series page.

Welcome to my page. My name is Stu Rodriquez and I have been waiting for this my whole life. I started this page the weekend after we clinched the division in September, and I have been typing on it every night since then instead of sleeping, which my wife Mary will be happy to tell you about.

On this page:

THE 1995 SEASON

The strike wiped out the end of last year and the World Series with it, and this year didn't get going until the end of April, so we only played 144 games. We won 100 of them. If they'd let us play all 162 I think we'd have won 115.

THE SEASON BOX
Record100-44, a .694 percentage
Finish1st in the AL Central, 30 games ahead of Kansas City
ClinchedSeptember 8, against Baltimore
Albert Belle50 home runs and 52 doubles. Nobody in history ever had 50 of each in one year. Nobody.
Jose Mesa46 saves. When he comes in from the bullpen the game is over.
Eddie MurrayHis 3,000th hit, June 30 in Minnesota, a single. 39 years old and still the guy you want up there.
Kenny LoftonLed the league in stolen bases again. If he's on first he's going to second.

Look at this lineup: Lofton leading off, Omar Vizquel, Carlos Baerga, Belle, Murray, Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez, Paul Sorrento, and Sandy Alomar catching (Tony Pena when Sandy was hurt). There is no place in that order to take a breath. Pitchers: Dennis Martinez, Orel Hershiser, Charlie Nagy, Ken Hill (we got him from St. Louis in July), Mark Clark and Chad Ogea, then Julian Tavarez, Eric Plunk, Paul Assenmacher and Jim Poole out of the pen, then Mesa. Mike Hargrove managing.

And we came from behind all year. You never turned the radio off. Never. My buddy Cliff Sabol at work left a game in the seventh inning back in June and we've been reminding him every day since.

THE DIVISION SERIES: BOSTON

Game 1
Tue. Oct. 3
at Jacobs Field
Indians 5, Red Sox 4 (13 inn.)
Albert tied it with a homer in the 11th and the Red Sox had the umpires take his bat to check it. It was just Albert. Then Tony Pena hit one out in the 13th, after two o'clock in the morning. I went to work on three hours of sleep and did not care.
Game 2
Wed. Oct. 4
at Jacobs Field
Indians 4, Red Sox 0
Orel. Eddie with a two-run homer. Clean and simple.
Game 3
Fri. Oct. 6
at Fenway Park
Indians 8, Red Sox 2
Nagy pitched great and we swept them in their own park. Three straight.

THE ALCS: SEATTLE

The Mariners beat the Yankees in five, and they had Randy Johnson and Ken Griffey Jr. and that Kingdome, which is the loudest building I ever heard on TV. I'll admit it, I was worried.

Game 1
Tue. Oct. 10
at Seattle
Mariners 3, Indians 2
A rookie named Bob Wolcott loaded the bases in the first inning and got out of it, and then he beat us. Who?
Game 2
Wed. Oct. 11
at Seattle
Indians 5, Mariners 2
Manny hit two home runs. Orel again.
Game 3
Fri. Oct. 13
at Jacobs Field
Mariners 5, Indians 2 (11 inn.)
Jay Buhner homered in the 11th. Friday the 13th. I should have known.
Game 4
Sat. Oct. 14
at Jacobs Field
Indians 7, Mariners 0
Ken Hill. Never in doubt.
Game 5
Sun. Oct. 15
at Jacobs Field
Indians 3, Mariners 2
Thome's two-run homer in the sixth. Orel won it.
Game 6
Tue. Oct. 17
at Seattle
Indians 4, Mariners 0
Dennis Martinez beat Randy Johnson. In the eighth Kenny scored all the way from second on a passed ball. I have it on tape and I've watched it maybe thirty times.

Orel Hershiser won the MVP of the series. Two starts, two wins. He came here this year after all those years with the Dodgers and he's exactly what we needed, a guy who's been there.

When the last out came in Game 6 I ran out on my front porch and yelled, and so did half the street. Somebody down the block was banging a pot with a spoon. It was a school night. My son Bobby, he's 11, was supposed to be asleep and was not.

ME AND THE TRIBE

I'm 37. I grew up on the near West Side, off Lorain Avenue, and I still live about two miles from the house I grew up in. I fix city buses for a living, second shift, so I have heard a lot of Indians games on a transistor radio sitting on a toolbox, with Herb Score calling them.

My dad took me to my first game at the old Stadium when I was seven. It held something like 75,000 people and some nights there were about 5,000 of us in there, with the wind off the lake in May and the seagulls coming in by the seventh inning. You could sit anywhere you wanted. We lost a lot. I mean a LOT. Everybody had a joke about the Indians. I have heard every one of them.

But we went anyway. I saw Super Joe Charboneau's year. I was at Len Barker's perfect game in '81, and if everybody who says they were there really was there, it would have been a sellout. When they moved into Jacobs Field last year I almost felt bad for the old place. Almost.

My dad died in 1988 and he never got to see any of this. Every time we win a big one I think about him. This page is for him, a little bit.

PARADE INFO

Coming soonCOMING SOON! When we win it there's going to be a parade downtown, and I'll put every bit of it up here: the route, the time, where to stand, and where I'm going to be standing. Bobby is already making a sign. The last time Cleveland won the World Series was 1948. My dad was 22.
