Here they are, the twelve girls of the Lady Lightning! All of them are 11 or 12 and in the
sixth or seventh grade. Most of them have played together since they were 9. The numbers are
the ones they picked, and every one of them has a reason, so ask them sometime.

About her |
| 1 | Charlotte | CF | Our leadoff hitter and the fastest girl on the team. A left-handed slapper, which means she's halfway to first before the ball lands. 31 stolen bases this year. |
| 3 | Meagan | 3B | Plays the hot corner like she's not scared of anything, because she isn't. Hit the walk-off double that won the Fall Brawl. Has not stopped smiling since. |
| 4 | Katie | 2B | The smallest Lightning and the toughest. Gets her uniform dirty in the first inning every single game, which her mother asked me to mention. |
| 7 | Stephanie | P | Our ace. Windmills a fastball that makes the boys on her street nervous, and a changeup that makes batters swing at nothing. Struck out nine in our state quarterfinal. Working on her drop ball with Coach Bill. |
| 8 | Tori | P / LF | Our number two pitcher, and our number one in the dugout cheers department. Threw a complete game in the Columbus losers' bracket in 98-degree heat. |
| 9 | Valerie | 1B | Five foot seven and still growing. Does the splits stretching for throws, which saves our infielders about one error a game. |
| 10 | Shaina | RF | Has the best arm on the team. Threw a girl out at first base from right field in Columbus, and the other team's coach came over afterward to shake her hand. |
| 12 | Brianne | SS | My girl! Shortstop, number two hitter, and the loudest voice on the field. Coach's Rule #4 (talk!) was basically written for her. Sold 31 raffle tickets and counting. |
| 15 | Jackie | LF / DP | Our cleanup hitter. Three home runs this year, one of them over the fence at the state tournament. The ball is probably still rolling. |
| 17 | Sonia | C / UT | Backup catcher, plays any position Coach asks, and the best bunter on the team. If we need a run, Sonia gets it there. |
| 21 | Hilary | OF / 1B | Our newest Lightning, who joined us in August. Her first hit with us was a triple. We think she's going to work out fine. |
| 22 | Marissa | C | Our catcher, and Coach Mitch's daughter. Squats behind the plate for five games a day in July without a complaint. Knows every batter's weakness after one at-bat. Scary. |
| THE GROWN-UPS |
| Head Coach | Mitchell Uchida |
| Pitching Coach | Bill Shults |
| Team Mom & Scorekeeper | Tammy Mahaney (that's me) |
| Fundraising | Jayne Boylan |
| Equipment & Van Caravan Leader | John Mahaney (my husband, who has never once let us get lost, except that time in Mississippi) |
Tryouts for the 2000 season will be held in November after the Fall Finale. Girls who
will be 12 or under next season are welcome. E-mail me and I'll put you on the list.
