MissingNo is a Pokemon that isn't supposed to be in the game. It looks like a bunch of scrambled squares, kind of like a backwards L. When you run into it, the item in the 6th spot of your item list goes up by more than 100. So you can get like 100 Rare Candies!!! Or Master Balls!!! That's why everybody does it.

Sometimes you get a different weird one instead, like one that's just called 'M. That works too.

You need a Pokemon that knows Fly and one that knows Surf. So you have to be pretty far in the game.

1. Get your items ready. Move the item you want lots of (I did Rare Candy) into the 6th spot in your item list. You can move items by pressing Select.
2. Go to Viridian City. Talk to the old man who shows you how to catch Pokemon. He's the one who was lying in the road at the start of the game. Say you're not in a hurry and let him show you.
3. Right away, Fly to Cinnabar Island. Don't go anywhere else first!
4. Surf up and down the right side of Cinnabar. There's a strip where the land and the water meet on the east edge of the island. Surf on the water right next to it, up and down, up and down.
5. Fight MissingNo! Wild Pokemon will pop up. Some are normal ones like high level Pokemon you usually can't find here. And some are MissingNo or 'M. You can run away, you don't have to catch it. Just seeing it is enough.
6. Check your items! Your 6th item should have a weird number now. That means it worked!!!

My cousin is 15 and he knows about computers. He says when the old man shows you how to catch a Pokemon, the game has to remember your name somewhere, and the place it puts it is the same place Cinnabar uses for the wild Pokemon list. So the letters in your name turn into weird Pokemon. That's why some people get different ones than other people. Kind of creepy but cool.

• My Hall of Fame pictures got all scrambled. They're still scrambled.
• Some of the pictures in fights looked weird for a little while after. It went away when I looked at one of my Pokemon's stats.
• I caught one MissingNo. It's in a box and I never use it. My friend says it's bad luck to put it in your party and I believe him.
• Everything else is fine and I have 99 Rare Candies!!! (I used some. OK, a lot.)
