News | Neighborhood Watch | Covenant Reminders | Board | September Minutes (draft)

Welcome to the Prairie Hawk Estates web site. This page is kept by the HOA secretary as a service to residents, so that meeting minutes, reminders and Watch alerts are available between issues of the paper newsletter. The newsletter is still delivered to every door each quarter, and it remains the official notice for anything requiring a vote.

For those new to the neighborhood (welcome to the eleven families who have moved in since spring!): Prairie Hawk Estates was platted in 1988 on what had been the Kroeger farm, and the Association was formed in 1989. Annual dues are $85 per household, due January 31. Dues pay for the entrance sign and its lights and flower beds, mowing of the common areas and the detention pond, the playground equipment and its insurance, and the newsletter.

News, September 1999

Neighborhood Garage Sale: Saturday, October 9, 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The Association will pay for one ad in the Sunday and Friday papers and put signs at the entrance and at 40th Street. To be listed on the map handed out at the entrance, call or e-mail Linda Farrow on Harrier Road by October 1. Please have signs picked up by Sunday evening.

Halloween: Sunday, October 31, 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Porch light on means trick-or-treaters welcome. Porch light off means please skip this house. Block captains will walk each street during those hours. Drivers, please take the loop at 10 miles an hour that night. Little ones in dark costumes are very hard to see.

National Night Out, August 3. Our third block party was the biggest yet. We counted 210 people, two fire trucks (one arrived and one was called away halfway through, to the disappointment of several four-year-olds), and 26 dozen cookies. Thank you to the Kaufmans for the use of their grill and to everyone who stayed to fold tables.

Y2K. Several residents have asked whether the entrance lights and the pond aerator will be affected by the year 2000. The Board has looked into it. Both run on mechanical dial timers that do not know what year it is. The playground has no computer chips. We believe we are ready.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
We look out for each other. We call the police. We do not confront anyone.

WATCH ALERT, Sept. 8-9: Three cars were entered overnight on Kestrel Court. All three were unlocked. A purse, a portable CD player, loose change and a cellular phone were taken. Nothing was damaged, which the officer said is typical: they walk down the street trying door handles and move on when a car is locked. Please lock your cars, even in your own driveway, and take valuables inside.

Also: A boy's mountain bike was taken from an open garage on Bobwhite Way on the afternoon of September 17. Please close garage doors when you're not out in the yard.

If you see something suspicious, call the police non-emergency number (it's on the refrigerator magnet every household received in the spring) and then let your block captain know. If it's happening right now and someone could get hurt, call 911. Do not approach anyone yourself.

Friendly Covenant Reminders

These come up at nearly every meeting, so here they are in one place. Every household received a copy of the covenants at closing. If yours has gone missing, e-mail me and I'll drop one in your mailbox.

  • Trash cans go out Monday night for Tuesday pickup and back in the garage or behind the fence by Tuesday night.
  • Boats, campers and trailers may be parked in driveways for loading and unloading, up to 72 hours. After that they need to be stored elsewhere.
  • Fences, sheds, decks and exterior paint colors need Architectural Committee approval before the work starts. It is much easier to talk about a fence before it is built. The form is free and the committee answers within 30 days, usually much sooner.
  • Satellite dishes: federal rules say we can't prohibit the small ones. We only ask that you put yours somewhere less visible from the street if you can do so and still get a picture.
  • Dogs must be leashed on the walking path around the pond. And please, bring a bag.
  • Please do not feed the geese. There are forty-one of them now. We counted.
