STORM LOG
Great Bend WxCam · what came over the back yard, winter 1998 to now

<< Back to the WxCam

I've kept a weather notebook since I took the spotter class in 1986. These are the entries worth passing along since the camera went up. Rain and wind are from my own gauge and anemometer in the back yard, so they won't always match what the radio says for Great Bend. Times are Central. "Called in" means I reported it to the Weather Service as a spotter.

Date What happened
Sun.-Mon.
Dec. 20-21, 1998
Snow all night, 6.0 inches on the snow board by morning, drifted along the cedars. Cleared off to blue sky by 8. Bitter cold behind it. In the Greatest Hits.
Thu.
Apr. 8, 1999
First thunder of the year, a little after 5 p.m. 0.34 inch of rain. Nothing severe, but it's always good to hear.
Mon.
May 3, 1999
Watched the towers going up off to the south all afternoon and sat out at my spotting spot west of town until after 9. Nothing here but a gusty south wind and lightning a long way off. Came home to the TV and the tornado that hit Haysville and the south side of Wichita, and the Oklahoma City storms. A night nobody who was watching will forget. Our prayers are with those folks.
Sun.
May 16, 1999
1.83 inches in about an hour. The road ditch ran full and the camera showed nothing but water on the glass.
Tue.
June 22, 1999
The shelf cloud. First sight of it about 6:40 p.m., frame saved at 6:52, peak gust 64 mph at 6:57. Dust so thick for a few minutes I lost the road. 0.48 inch of rain after. Called in. Limbs down in town, wheat around here mostly came through. In the Greatest Hits.
Wed.
July 14, 1999
Hail, nickel size with a few quarters, for about three minutes around 4:30 p.m. Called in. Joan's tomatoes took the worst of it.
Fri.
July 30, 1999
High of 104 in the shade of the mast, the hottest of the summer here. Rough week to carry mail. Drink your water.
Fri.
Aug. 6, 1999
Night storm out west, lightning nonstop for over an hour. Caught the bolt at 10:17 p.m. 0.71 inch of rain after midnight. In the Greatest Hits.
Sun.
Sept. 26, 1999
Nothing to report, and glad of it. 81 and a south wind. Milo harvest about to start.

Rain for 1999 through September 26: 22.63 inches.

If you've got a storm story from Barton County or anywhere nearby, send it along and tell me where you were. I'll add the good ones.
