Fair Week 1999: What a Week!!

Hello and welcome to our club's very own web page! I'm Brenda Schoonover, one of the club's two organizational leaders (along with Marlys Hefty, who has been doing this since before some of our parents were members). My daughter Abby is our club Reporter, and she was supposed to make this page, but she's a senior this year and between volleyball and her market lambs, guess who ended up learning HTML at the kitchen table? That's right. Please be patient with me.

Our county fair ran Wednesday, July 21, through Sunday, July 25, and I think it was the hottest fair week any of us can remember. The heat index was over 105 on Friday. The boys rigged extra box fans in the hog barn, the girls kept the sheep wet down, and we went through more ice than the Pork Producers tent. Not one animal from our club had trouble in the heat, and I want every member to know I'm proud of how you took care of them.

Here are the big ones. The complete list of our ribbons and placings is here.

Ribbon Cole showed the Grand Champion Market Barrow! First time a Go-Getter has won the barrow show since 1991. He walked that hog for two hours every evening since April.
Ribbon Abby (yes, mine) had the Reserve Champion Market Lamb and won Senior Sheep Showmanship. Her last fair as a member. I cried. Her dad pretended he didn't.
Ribbon State Fair selections: Maddie's photography print, Jacob's cedar bench, and Hannah's Fashion Revue outfit all went on to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines in August. Jacob's bench got a blue there too!
Ribbon Herdsmanship award, swine barn. This goes to the club that keeps its pens and aisle cleanest all week. Swept three times a day, signs up, tack boxes lined up straight. Way to go, everybody!

Our Clover Kids (kindergarten through 3rd grade) showed too! Emma led her bucket calf, Oreo, around the ring all by herself, and the twins, Ben and Grace, brought their rabbits. Clover Kids aren't judged against each other, so everyone got a participation ribbon, and I'm told several of them have been hung over beds.

The lemonade stand. Our club ran the lemonade stand by the grandstand all five days and we sold 1,406 cups! Every member worked at least two shifts. The money goes to our club camp fund and the new banner. Thank you to Riedemann's Grocery for the discount on the lemons and sugar, and to Dwayne Kuehl for hauling the stand in and out with his flatbed.

THANK YOU to Our Buyers!
At the Sale of Champions and the premium auction on Sunday, these folks supported our kids. Please thank them when you see them in town:

♣ Hartwig Feed & Grain
♣ Farmers Savings Bank
♣ Kuehl Implement
♣ Lindstrom Veterinary Clinic
♣ Prairie Co-op Elevator
♣ Ostrander Insurance
♣ The Coffee Cup Cafe
♣ Vern and Delores Pingel

Members: thank-you notes to your buyers are due at the October meeting. Handwritten, please. Tell them what you learned and what you'll do with the money. A lot of our buyers keep those notes for years.

What's Next

  • Record books go to the Extension office by October 1. Bring them to me first if you want a second pair of eyes.
  • National 4-H Week is October 3-9. Wear green on Wednesday!
  • October meeting: Sunday, October 10, 2:00 p.m., church basement. Enrollment forms for the new 4-H year are due, and we elect officers. Roll call: your favorite fair food.
  • Achievement Night is in November at the fairgrounds. Date to come from the Extension office.
  • Thinking about joining? Anyone in 4th through 12th grade can be a member, and kindergarten through 3rd grade can be Clover Kids. You don't need to live on a farm! We have members who do photography, cooking, woodworking, dogs, and sewing and have never touched a hog.

About Our Club
The Go-Getters meet the second Sunday of every month at 2:00 in the basement of the Methodist church. We have 19 members and 6 Clover Kids this year. Every meeting has roll call, a business meeting run by our officers, a talk or demonstration by two members, and a snack from whoever signed up. In the summer we do a service project (this year we planted flowers at the nursing home and painted the picnic shelter at the park). The four H's on our clover stand for Head, Heart, Hands and Health, and I see all four in these kids every single year.

Pictures coming soon! Hannah's mom has three rolls of fair film at the drugstore. My nephew says he can scan them for me when he comes home at Thanksgiving.
