THIS IS OUR NEW WEB PAGE. It went up in
August. I made it after six Tuesday nights of the adult education class at the community college called
"Your First Home Page." I was the only one in there over 40 and the only one who brought a
carburetor to show and tell. If something doesn't work, let me know and I will ask the instructor.
My name is Stan Wojcik. I'm the club secretary and I write the newsletter, The Corral. I retired
in 1997 after 31 years at Dearborn Assembly, which is the plant in the Rouge where they have been
building Mustangs since the very first one. I own a 1966 hardtop, Wimbledon White, 289 with the
two-barrel, that I bought used in 1971 for $1,150. My wife says I have spent more on it since then than
we paid for the house. She is not wrong.
About 45 members and 38 cars, first generation Mustangs only, 1964½ to 1973. Stock, restored,
driver, project, basket case in the garage, we don't care. If it's a first-gen Mustang, or you wish you
had one, you're welcome. We're a regional club of the Mustang Club of America, but you don't have to
join the national to join us.
MEETINGS: Second Thursday of every month, 7:30 p.m., back room at Kowalski's Family Restaurant on
Fort Street. Come early and eat. The pierogi are the best Downriver and I will fight you on that.
DUES: $20 a year per family. Includes The Corral every month in your mailbox.
NEXT MEETING: Thursday, October 14. Program is Gil Brodeur on rebuilding an Autolite 4100 carb. Bring your questions and your leftover parts.
- THE BIG 3-5. The Mustang turned 35 on April 17. That's the day Ford showed it off at the World's Fair in New York in 1964. We had a birthday cake at the April meeting with a running horse on it, and Walt Ferency cried a little, because he bought his '65 convertible new off the lot that summer and he still has it.
- WOODWARD DREAM CRUISE, Saturday, August 21. Fourteen club cars lined up together along Woodward. Hot, loud and crowded, and every one of us would do it again tomorrow. Joe Pastorek's '69 Mach 1 overheated in Royal Oak at 3:00 in the afternoon, and five guys who never met him helped him push it into a parking lot. That's the car hobby.
- 9TH ANNUAL PONY ROUNDUP, Sunday, September 12. Our own show, in the church lot on Fort Street. 71 Mustangs registered, a new record. Best of Show went to Carl Hendricks for his 1968 fastback in Highland Green, and yes, everybody made the Bullitt joke. Ladies' Choice went to Rita Szabo's '65 Poppy Red convertible. We raised $640 for the Goodfellows.
- COMING UP: FALL COLOR TOUR, Sunday, October 10. We leave from Kowalski's at 9:00 a.m. sharp and head west through the Irish Hills on US-12. Lunch stop, then home by dark. Top down if it's over 55 degrees. Full tank, please. Last year somebody had to be rescued with a gas can and I'm not saying who, Gil.
| STAN'S TECH CORNER: READ YOUR VIN |
Every month somebody at the meeting asks what their car really is. On a '65 to '67 Mustang, the VIN
tells you a lot. Say your door tag or fender apron reads 6F07C123456:
| 6 | Model year. 5 is 1965, 6 is 1966, 7 is 1967. (Your '64½ says 5 too. Ford titled them all as '65s.) |
| F | Assembly plant. F is Dearborn, R is San Jose, T is Metuchen, New Jersey. F is the best one. I'm not biased. |
| 07 | Body. 07 is the hardtop, 08 the convertible, 09 the fastback. |
| C | Engine. C is the 289 two-barrel. K is the High Performance 289. If anybody is selling you a K-code cheap, call me first and I will come look at it with you. |
| 123456 | Consecutive unit number. |
And about that ½: the early cars built before the fall of '64 had a generator instead of an
alternator, and some had the 260 V8 instead of the 289. If you want to start an argument at a meeting,
call Walt's car a '65.
