What's up. I'm Antonio, I'm 15, and I have every license in Gran Turismo. B, A, International B, and International A. I've been playing since the week it came out last year and I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty good.
If you don't know Gran Turismo: it's the realest racing game there is. Real cars, real makes, and they all drive different. In the main mode you start with a little money, you buy a cheap car, you win races to earn credits, and you spend the credits on better cars and parts. But you can't just enter any race you want. First you have to earn your license, by passing a set of driving tests for each one. A lot of people get stuck on the tests and quit. Don't quit. That's what this page is for.

| THE LICENSES AND HOW I PASSED THEM |
| GRAN TURISMO DRIVER LICENSE · CLASS B |
HOLDER: ANTONIO STATUS: PASSED
WHAT IT IS: The first one. Starting, stopping, and easy corners. The stop tests are where you floor it down a straight and then have to stop inside a box.
HOW I PASSED IT: Brake earlier than you think. Everybody overshoots the box the first ten times. Brake hard in a straight line and ease off right at the end so you don't slide past.

|
| GRAN TURISMO DRIVER LICENSE · CLASS A |
HOLDER: ANTONIO STATUS: PASSED
WHAT IT IS: Harder corners and faster cars. This is where "slow in, fast out" stops being something you read and starts being something you do.
HOW I PASSED IT: I stopped trying to go fast in the corners. I went fast OUT of the corners. Way better times. It feels slower and it's faster. Trust me.

|
| GRAN TURISMO DRIVER LICENSE · CLASS INT'L B |
HOLDER: ANTONIO STATUS: PASSED
WHAT IT IS: Now it's big chunks of the actual race tracks from the game, in cars with way more power. One mistake and the run is over.
HOW I PASSED IT: I learned the tracks first. I drove the same track over and over in Arcade mode until I knew every corner without thinking, THEN went back to the test. Also this is where I learned to stay off the grass. The grass is not a shortcut.

|
| GRAN TURISMO DRIVER LICENSE · CLASS INT'L A |
HOLDER: ANTONIO STATUS: PASSED!!!
WHAT IT IS: The big one. Long, fast, and the time you need to beat doesn't give you any room at all.
HOW I PASSED IT: Honestly? Stubbornness. The last test took me so many tries I stopped counting. I passed it at 11:40 on a school night and yelled so loud my mom yelled back from her room. Worth it. What finally did it: I picked one braking point for every corner (a sign, a shadow, the end of a curb) and braked at the exact same spot every single lap.

| ANTONIO'S RULES OF DRIVING |
- Brake BEFORE the turn, in a straight line. Not in the turn. Braking in the turn is how you end up facing backwards.
- Smooth on the gas coming out. Floor it in the middle of a corner in a car with a lot of power and you WILL spin. Ask the Viper.
- Outside, inside, outside. Start the turn wide, cut in to the inside, and let the car drift back out wide on the exit. Use the whole road.
- Walls are not brakes. Bouncing off the wall loses way more time than braking would have.
- Switch to manual once you're decent. Automatic shifts when it wants. Manual shifts when YOU want.
- Watch your replays, especially the bad runs. You can see exactly where you braked too late.
- Same braking point every lap. Pick a marker and use it every single time. That's the whole secret of International A.

I have 38 cars. Some I race, some I just like looking at, and some are cars I bought when I didn't know anything and now I can't sell them because they're my first cars. My top three:
| # |
CAR |
WHY |
| 1 | Nissan Skyline GT-R V-spec | My main car. All-wheel drive, twin turbo, and it'll do anything you tell it. I've won more races in this than everything else put together. |
| 2 | Toyota Supra RZ | I had it race-modified at the tune shop, so now it's a full race car. Cost a TON. Looks amazing. |
| 3 | Mazda RX-7 | Rotary engine. Best sounding car in the game. Rear-wheel drive, so you have to actually drive it. |

|
Every race you win pays credits. Credits buy cars, and they buy parts at the tune shop. Here's how I spend them:
- Tires first. Always. Better tires make every corner better and they're the most speed for the money.
- Suspension second. Better suspension means the car doesn't lean and wallow, and the good stuff lets you adjust things yourself, like the springs and the ride height.
- Weight reduction. A lighter car is faster everywhere: speeding up, slowing down and turning. Nothing it's bad at.
- Power LAST. A turbo is fun, but power you can't put on the ground is useless. If your car already spins its tires, more horsepower just means more spinning.
- Transmission. Closer gears help a lot on tracks with tight corners. The fully adjustable one lets you set every gear, which is great once you know what you're doing and a disaster before that.
My rule: grip before power. Every time.

THE DINNER PROBLEM
My mom calls me for dinner at exactly the wrong time. EVERY time. Last lap. Last corner. Third try at a test I'm about to pass. Middle of an endurance race, which are the longest races in the game and there's no good time to stop. Yes, you can pause it. My mom does not care that you can pause it. She says the food doesn't pause. I've been pulled away mid-race more times than I've lost a race, which says something about my driving and also about my mom. |
| GRAN TURISMO 2: THE COUNTDOWN |
DAYS UNTIL GT2:
???
It's supposed to come out later this year. Nobody will tell me the exact day. When I know, this turns into a real countdown. |
|
Everybody says GT2 is going to have way more cars. I'll believe it when I'm driving them. Here's what I want:
- More cars. Obviously.
- Dirt. I'd love rally racing, on dirt, in an Impreza, sliding sideways.
- More tracks. I know every track in the first one by heart. I can drive Trial Mountain with my eyes closed. (I tried. I can't. But almost.)
- A way to save in the middle of an endurance race. See: The Dinner Problem.
- A Ferrari. I know. I'm just saying.
- Harder licenses. Bring it.
Everybody at school is talking about the Dreamcast, which came out today. I'm staying with my PlayStation until GT2. Loyalty.
