THE SCORE LOG every time I beat my own best, 1982 to now back to the machine · the acts & the truckers |
|
I've kept this in the back of my appointment book every year since 1982. Not every game, just the nights I beat my own best. Since 1983 they're all signed off on Ed's board too, so nobody can say I made them up. Before that you'll have to take my word for it, and the word of a cook named Dale who doesn't work there anymore. |
| WHEN | SCORE | WHAT HAPPENED |
| Apr. 1982 | 4,110 | My first quarter, on my break, in my apron. |
| July 1982 | 21,350 | First time I saw the light blue maze. |
| Nov. 1982 | 38,920 | First time I saw all three acts. Dale the cook watched the stork with me. |
| June 1983 | 52,880 | The first line ever written on Ed's board. |
| Aug. 1984 | 61,040 | Last week of waitressing. Started beauty school in September. |
| May 1985 | 74,300 | The night I got my cosmetology license. Celebrated. |
| Apr. 1986 | 79,920 | First week in her new spot by the restrooms. |
| Feb. 1987 | 88,760 | The board was all DLK by now, so Ed made the one-line-per-person rule. |
| Oct. 1988 | 92,110 | The night before my wedding. My mother was not pleased. I was. |
| Sept. 1989 | 95,500 | Seven months pregnant. Had to stand sideways. |
| Feb. 1990 | 101,230 | Over 100,000 for the first time. My son was two months old and asleep in his car seat in the booth. Ed watched him. |
| 1991 | — | Nothing. A toddler, and the cracked joystick. |
| Mar. 1992 | 112,650 | Finally used to the new knob. |
| July 1993 | 118,470 | Good thing, too. See Big Swede, November. |
| Aug. 1994 | 121,080 | She's in the back corner now. No glare. Immediately better. |
| Oct. 1995 | 127,310 | Divorce was final in September. I played a lot that fall. I don't need to say more than that. |
| Tue., Apr. 16, 1996 | 131,470 | NOT ME. LKY. The day somebody beat me. Read about it on the truckers page. |
| Thu., May 2, 1996 | 133,900 | Got it back. Sixteen days. I played every single one of them. |
| Oct. 1997 | 138,240 | Ed had the monitor rebuilt in the summer. I could see Inky coming for the first time in years. |
| Thu., Aug. 20, 1998 | 141,390 | MY BEST EVER. Well, 12:40 Friday morning, technically. The banana. My hands shook for an hour. |
| June 1999 | 139,770 | Not a new best, but the closest I've come since, so it goes in the book. 1,620 short. I counted. |
|
Goal for 1999: 150,000 before New Year's. If the machine and the world are both still running on January 1st, which Ed says they'd better be, because he's not paying to have her Y2K'd, I'll try again in 2000. (She doesn't have a clock in her, Ed. She'll be fine.) |
