>> WHAT'S A DOOR? For the new folks: a door is a program that runs outside the BBS itself. You pick it off the menu, the board "opens the door" and hands you over to the game, and when you quit, you come back to the board. Most door games are made to be played a little every day by everybody on the board, so you're always playing against the people you trade messages with. That's the whole charm. LORD and Trade Wars are the big two here, and they have their own pages. These are the rest. |
| BARREN REALMS ELITE |
|
You run a kingdom. Land, food, peasants, soldiers, spies, and a treasury that's never big enough. Every day you get your turns to build up, and then you go after the other realms: invade them, sabotage them, send spies in. It's mostly arithmetic with a crown on, and I love it. The best part of BRE is that boards can play each other. Each night, every board in the league trades a packet of moves, so your realm here is fighting realms on boards hundreds of miles away. We're in a small league with a handful of boards around the Northwest. The Rusty Nail finished third out of six last round, which is the best we've done. Tips: Feed your people. A starving kingdom falls apart faster than anything an enemy can do to it. Don't attack somebody twice your size. And don't attack anybody the first week; build. |
| USURPER |
|
Usurper is for the people who finished LORD and wanted something meaner. It's a fantasy game with a town and a dungeon that goes down a long, long way, and it's darker and a lot more complicated than LORD. There are more ways to get strong and more ways to get yourself killed. You fight your way down, you get rich, you make enemies, you join a team, and if you get strong enough you can take the throne in town and rule, which is where the name comes from. Then everybody who wanted it comes after you. Fair warning: it's grown-up. There's drinking and fighting and some other things, nothing worse than a Saturday night at some places I could name, but it's not one I'd point a twelve-year-old at. We have about eight regulars. SnowDog has been King since the middle of August and is starting to act like it. Tips: Don't go deeper than you're ready for. The dungeon doesn't care how brave you are. Join a team early. And don't make the King mad. |
| THE REST OF THE MENU |
|
* A checkers door. Play another caller, a move at a time, whenever you're both on. * A trivia door with about four thousand questions. My wife Eva holds the high score on it and would like everybody to know that. * A blackjack door that pays out in time credits. The house always wins. It's my house. * The one-liner wall. Not a game, but people treat it like one. |

>> WANT A DOOR ADDED? E-mail me. If it runs on DOS, behaves itself on a multi-node board, and a few of you will actually play it, I'll put it up. I've got room, and the old 486 isn't going anywhere. |
