>> THE GAME Seth Robinson wrote Legend of the Red Dragon in 1989 and it has been the most popular door on just about every board I ever called, mine included. The setup is simple. A red dragon has been terrorizing the town. You're a warrior who means to kill it. You start at level one with a stick and nothing in your pockets. What makes it work is that you only get a few turns a day. You log on, you fight your forest fights, you visit the Inn, you check who killed who in the daily news, and then you're done until tomorrow. That's the hook. That's why grown men with jobs have been logging on every night for ten years to see if they're ready to fight their master yet. |
| A DAY IN THE REALM |
|
The Forest. Where you earn your living. Every day you get a set number of forest fights. You go in, something jumps out at you, and you fight it for gold and experience. Strange things happen in the forest now and then, some good and some not. Use every fight, every day. The Masters. When you've got enough experience, you go to Turgon's training grounds and challenge your master. Beat him and you go up a level and get a new master. Lose and you try again tomorrow. Ask your master first. He'll tell you if you're ready. The Inn. The Red Dragon Inn is where you go to talk, to rest, and to get in trouble. Violet the barmaid is there for the gentlemen to flirt with, and Seth Able the bard for the ladies, and he'll sing you a song once a day, which now and then does you some good. A room at the Inn costs gold, but you're a lot safer sleeping there than out in the fields. The Fields. Where you can attack other players. Where they can attack you. If you log off in the fields, expect company. The Dragon. Once you've beaten all the masters and you're level 12, you can go hunting the Red Dragon in the forest. Kill it and you're a hero, your name goes down in the history of the realm, and you start over from level one. Most people don't get it the first time. Most people don't get it the third time. |
| HOTSTICK'S TIPS |
|
* Put your gold in the bank before you do anything risky. Gold in your pocket is gold somebody else can take off your body. * Heal before you fight, not after. The healer is cheap. Dying isn't. * Buy the best weapon and armor you can afford every time you level. Don't sit on a pile of gold. * Pay for the room. I've lost count of how many people have quit for the night in the fields to save a few coins and woken up dead. * Don't go after the dragon the first day you hit 12. Get your gear up first. * Read the daily news. It's half the fun, and it'll tell you who's out hunting players. |

PK = other players killed this game. DRG = times killed the Red Dragon this game. Bitterroot got the dragon on 09/04 and started over at level one, which is why a hero is sitting in the middle of the list. Grimwald won the last game more times than I can count and says he's "taking it easy this time." Nobody believes him. MissKitty: twelve player kills in seven weeks. The rest of you, sleep at the Inn. |
