Hi. I'm Travis, I'm 16, and this is my page about the most important war going
on right now, which is Netscape vs. Internet Explorer. I am on the Netscape
side. I have been on the Netscape side since Navigator 3 and I will be on the
Netscape side until they pry the big N with the shooting stars out of the corner of
my screen.
Every page on my site is built and tested in Netscape Navigator 4.61 on a 15 inch
monitor at 800x600. That's what "best viewed with" means. It means I know it
looks right there. If you're on IE it will probably look fine. Probably.
TOP 7 REASONS NETSCAPE RULES
- It runs on everything. Windows, Mac, AND Linux. Try finding IE for Linux.
Go ahead, I'll wait.
- <BLINK> works. IE has never done BLINK. Not once. How are people
supposed to know what's important?
- Composer comes with it. A free web page editor right in the box. (I only
used it for my first week. Real webmasters use Notepad. But still.)
- Messenger does e-mail AND newsgroups in the same window.
- The source code is free. Last year they gave the whole thing away so anybody
could look at how it works and help make the next one. Could you imagine the other
guys doing that? No you could not.
- It isn't glued into Windows. You can install it, and you can take it back
out, and your computer doesn't fall apart.
- The N with the shooting stars. Watching the stars fall while a page
loads over a 33.6 is the best part of the Internet. The little logo up in the
corner of IE is fine I guess. It's not stars.
THINGS IE PAGES DO THAT MAKE ME CRAZY
- MARQUEE. It only scrolls in IE. In Netscape it just sits there like a
normal line of text. So people put their MOST important news in a marquee and half
the Internet reads it standing still. (Yes I have one at the top. It's a joke. Get it.)
- "Best viewed with Internet Explorer" pages that use IE-only
scripts, so in Netscape the menus don't open and you get a gray box with a little
error message down in the corner.
- It comes on every new computer already. Windows 98 has IE built right in.
My uncle thinks IE IS the Internet. He calls it "the blue E." The government's
been taking Microsoft to court about this stuff since last fall and there STILL isn't
a decision.
- Those channel things on the desktop. My cousin has like fifteen of them
and has never clicked one.
WHY 800x600
Because 640x480 is for people who still have the 14 inch monitor that came with
their 486, and 1024x768 on a 15 inch makes the letters so tiny you have to lean in
like you're reading the bottom line at the eye doctor. 800x600 is the sweet spot.
Right-click the desktop, Properties, Settings, slide the thing. You're welcome.
THE OFFICIAL POLL
(everybody on my bus plus my cousins, taken the first week of September)
| Netscape | 12 |
| Internet Explorer | 9 |
| "Whatever AOL is" | 4 |
| Lynx (my uncle, at work) | 1 |
| "What's a browser" | 3 |
NETSCAPE WINS. (Of the 9 IE people, 6 said it was just what came on the computer.
That doesn't count as choosing.)
UPDATE 9/12/99 -- OK FINE
I was at my cousin's and I tried IE 5 on his computer. I'll be honest because
that's the kind of webmaster I am. It opened my page faster than mine does, and
my big links table looked fine. Then I found out why: I left out a
</td> and the </table> at the bottom, and IE just
shrugged and showed it anyway. Netscape shows you NOTHING if you forget
</table>. The whole table just vanishes. So I'm still on the Netscape
side, because Netscape makes you write it RIGHT. IE lets you be sloppy. That's not
a feature. That's a bad influence.
Also everybody keeps saying Netscape 5 is coming. It had better come soon.

People have been sending me mail about this page. A LOT of mail. I put the best
ones up here: THE HATE MAIL (and my answers).
