De Menudo
a la Vida Loca

Anita's Ricky Martin Page

La carrera / The career  •  Mis canciones / My songs

ESPAÑOL ENGLISH
¡Bienvenidos! Me llamo Anita Diaz, tengo 22 años y soy puertorriqueña.

Welcome! My name is Anita Diaz, I'm 22 and I'm Puerto Rican. I was born and raised in San Juan, and when I was a little girl the walls of my room were covered with Menudo posters. My favorite, from day one, was Ricky.

When I was fifteen my mom and I moved to Orlando, and I'm finishing college here now. This year, all of a sudden, the whole United States knows who Ricky Martin is. He's on English radio, he's in all the magazines, my classmates sing his songs. And I think: we've known since 1984. Welcome to the party!

I made this page in both languages because that's how I live, and because that's how he sings.

LA CARRERA  /  THE CAREER
1984 – 1989  •  Menudo
Enrique Martín Morales, from San Juan, joins Menudo in 1984, at just twelve years old. Five years of tours, concerts and screaming girls (I was one of them). My mom took me to see them in 1986 and I cried from the first song to the last. He leaves the group in 1989.
He goes to Mexico, acts in the soap opera Alcanzar una estrella II, and records his first solo albums, Ricky Martin (1991) and Me amarás (1993). He's not the kid from Menudo anymore.
1994 – 1996  •  General Hospital
He moves to Los Angeles and joins the American soap General Hospital as Miguel Morez, a bartender who sings. My mom and I never missed an episode. She says it was the first time she ever watched the show.
1995  •  A medio vivir
His third album has "María" on it, which becomes a hit all over the world. In Europe they danced to it even if they didn't know a word of Spanish.
1996  •  Broadway
He plays Marius in Les Misérables on Broadway. My aunt went to see him in New York and brought me back the program. I have it framed.
The album Vuelve comes out, and "La copa de la vida" ("The Cup of Life") is the official song of the soccer World Cup in France. He sings it there for the whole world. My cousin, who knows nothing about soccer, learned the entire dance.
Vuelve wins the Grammy for Best Latin Pop Performance. And that same night he sings "The Cup of Life" at the ceremony, with drums and dancers, and the whole theater stands up. I was in our living room with my mom and my cousin Valerie, screaming like crazy people. We called my grandmother in San Juan and she was screaming too. That was the night America discovered him.
His first English album comes out, called Ricky Martin, and "Livin' la Vida Loca" goes to number one in the United States. Number one! I hear it at the supermarket, in the car, at the drugstore. This summer there was no escaping that song, and I didn't want to escape.

Gracias. One more thing. This page is about his career only. His private life is his business, and I won't answer gossip e-mails. Thank you.
