Three days of old scooters, Northern soul, ska, rocksteady, a long ride in the fall leaves along
the James River, and the dumbest contests we can think of. Our third year. All scooters are welcome:
vintage, modern, Italian, Indian, Japanese, held together with zip ties, we don't care. Come on down.
THE SCHEDULE
| FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22 |
| 6:00 p.m. | Registration at the coffeehouse on West Main. Get your patch, your ride map and your bearings. |
| 9:00 p.m. | Soul & Ska Night upstairs at a bar in Shockoe Bottom (directions in your packet). Two DJs with crates of Northern soul, Motown, Jamaican ska, rocksteady and 2 Tone, and a live set from the Fan District Rocksteady Orchestra, all nine of them. Dress sharp. Dance till they throw us out. |
| SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23 |
| 10:00 a.m. | Coffee, biscuits and kickstarting at the coffeehouse. |
| 11:00 a.m. | The Ride-Out. About 60 miles round trip, east on Route 5 along the James, past the old plantations and the fall color, to Charles City and back, with a lunch stop at a country store. Tamra leads, Rudy's van sweeps. Wait at every turn. |
| 4:00 p.m. | The Gymkhana in the lot behind the record store:
· Slow race: 50 feet, no feet down, last one across the line wins. Harder than it sounds.
· Plank ride: ride the full length of a 2x10 plank without falling off. Fastest clean run wins.
· Plug change race: pull your spark plug, put it back, and kickstart it. Bring your own wrench. Greg's record is 41 seconds. |
| 8:00 p.m. | Awards and party. Chili and records at Rudy's place in Oregon Hill. Trophies for Best Vespa, Best Lambretta, Furthest Traveled and the most honored of all, Hard Luck. |
| SUNDAY, OCTOBER 24 |
| Noon | The regular Sunday ride, slow and short, up to Libby Hill for the view and back for breakfast. Then everybody heads home. Ride safe. |
HOW TO SIGN UP
$15 if you sign up by Friday, October 15. $20 at the door. That gets you the rally patch
(this year it's the club target with an ace of clubs in the middle, red, white and blue on black), the
ride map, Friday night admission and Saturday chili.
To sign up, e-mail us with:
- Your name (or what people call you)
- Where you're riding in from
- What you ride (year and model, we're nosy)
- How many people are coming with you
- Whether you need a floor to sleep on
Pay when you get here. We have floors and couches for about twenty people at members'
houses, first come first served. For the rest, there are plenty of motels out on the Boulevard and
by the interstate.
THE FINE PRINT
- Helmets on every ride. Virginia law and our law.
- No burnouts, no wheelies, no revving at 2 a.m. These are our neighborhoods and we have to live here.
- If your scoot breaks down, the van will get you. Nobody gets left on the shoulder.
- Our friends in eastern North Carolina got hit hard by the flooding from Hurricane Floyd last
week. If your scoot went under, come anyway. We'll find you something to ride.
