Every week somebody e-mails me a "secret shortcut" and about one in ten is real. Here's what actually works, what sort of works, and what's a waste of a mushroom. I've tested every one of these myself on 150cc. |
| RAINBOW ROAD: THE BIG DROP |
|
Works: YES. Rainbow Road starts with a long downhill. If you go off the edge at the right spot on that first big hill, you don't fall into space, you land on the track below and skip a huge chunk of the lap. It took me about thirty tries to find the spot. Once you have it, you can do it every lap. Line up just past the start and aim for the section of road you can see below you. Don't overthink it. If Lakitu has to fish you out, you missed. This is why our Rainbow Road times are nowhere near five minutes. |
| KOOPA TROOPA BEACH: THROUGH THE ROCK |
| Works: YES, with a mushroom. There's a little ramp in the water that points at the big rock. Hit it with a mushroom and you fly right through the hole in the rock. Without a mushroom you don't have the speed and you smack into the rock and feel silly. Watch the crabs on your way to it. |
| WARIO STADIUM: OVER THE WALL |
|
Works: YES, but. This is the famous one. Near the start there's a spot where, with the right speed and the right hop at the right place, you can jump over the wall and land on another part of the track, way ahead. It skips most of the lap. The trouble is that it's really, really hard. I have landed it five times in my life. Dwight has landed it twice, both times when nobody was watching, so it doesn't count. We've agreed that until one of us can do it three laps in a row, Wario Stadium times are done the long way. Hence the four minutes. |
| YOSHI VALLEY: PICK YOUR PATH |
| Works: sort of. Yoshi Valley is a maze of paths through the canyon, and they aren't all the same length. It isn't a shortcut exactly, you just need to learn which way is fastest. During a race the game won't even tell you what place you're in until the end, because nobody can tell who's ahead. In Time Trials, race your ghost down each route and see which one gets there first. I'm not telling you mine. Figure it out like I did. |
| KALIMARI DESERT: THE TRAIN TUNNEL |
| Works: not really. Dwight swears that driving along the railroad tracks through the tunnel is faster. I timed it with ghosts about twenty times. It's the same, give or take, and the train is right there. When it's coming, you lose. Don't bother. |
| DON'T BELIEVE IT |
