>HINT
THE RECORDER'S OFFICE
hints, a little at a time
[ about the game ] [ transcript ] [ hints ] [ how I built it ]

How this works: Each problem has a few nudges, gentlest first. Read one, go back to the game, and try again before you read the next. The full answer is at the bottom of each box, in black on black. To read it, drag your mouse across the empty space after ANSWER: and it will show up highlighted. I'd rather you didn't, but I'm not your mother.
|
>1. Where do I even start?
* You're a title searcher. What does a title searcher look at first?
* The big ledgers on the slanted shelves in the Recording Room are the indexes. You know whose name you're looking for.
* Walter Colquitt received the farm, so he's the grantee.
ANSWER: LOOK UP COLQUITT IN GRANTEE INDEX. It sends you to Book 214, Page 77, in the deed vault to the north.
|
>2. Somebody cut the pages out. Now what?
* Paper isn't the only way a county keeps its records.
* Look closely at the vault door. Closely.
* There's a room in the building you haven't been in yet.
ANSWER: READ PLAQUE beside the vault door. The old books were microfilmed in 1958. The film is in the Film Room, east of the Recording Room.
|
>3. The Film Room door is locked.
* Who in this building would keep the keys?
* Mrs. Bevis's office, to the west, isn't locked. Her desk drawer is.
* Think like one of my beta testers.
* No, really. Think like one of my beta testers. What do they type when they're bored?
ANSWER: LOOK UNDER DESK in the recorder's office. A little key is taped there. UNLOCK DRAWER WITH LITTLE KEY, OPEN DRAWER, and take the key ring. It opens the Film Room and the film cabinet.
|
>4. The microfilm reader won't light up.
* Listen to it when you turn it on. The fan works. What doesn't?
* Something small is burned out. Only one person in this building changes things like that.
* He's in the basement, down the back stairs. He isn't going to hand county property to somebody who isn't supposed to be in the building. Give him a reason to care.
* He has worked here for thirty-one years. How would he feel about somebody cutting up one of his books?
ANSWER: Go DOWN to the boiler room. SHOW BOOK 214 TO LEDOUX. When he's done being angry, ASK LEDOUX ABOUT BULB. Then PUT BULB IN READER and TURN ON READER.
|
>5. There are about a hundred reels of film. Which one?
* The boxes are labeled. Read the labels.
* Each reel holds more than one book.
ANSWER: Reel 31 holds Books 210 through 216. PUT REEL 31 ON READER, TURN CRANK until you reach Book 214, then READ SCREEN. Page 77 is there, whole.
|
>6. I found the deed on the film. Why didn't I win?
* A picture of a deed on a screen isn't going to stop an auction.
* Look at the machine again. It's called a reader-printer for a reason.
* Even a print isn't an official copy until somebody official says it is. Who unlocks this building in the morning?
ANSWER: PUSH PRINT BUTTON and take the print. TURN OFF READER. Then WAIT until 7:00 A.M., when Mrs. Bevis comes in the back door, and GIVE PRINT TO BEVIS. She will certify it with the county seal, and you'll have time to cross the square.
|
>7. What about John Morrow?
* You're a title searcher, not a policeman. But you've picked up a couple of things tonight that a policeman might like to see.
* Remember the register on the counter.
ANSWER: After Mrs. Bevis certifies the print, SHOW BLADE TO BEVIS and SHOW BAND TO BEVIS, and tell her about the register. That gets you the last points and the better of the two endings.
|
>8. Can I get stuck where I can't win?
* Only one way, and the game warns you twice before it happens.
ANSWER: If you leave the reader turned on for too long, the new bulb burns out too, and there isn't a third one. Turn it off when you're done.
|
>9. How are the 25 points scored? (full spoilers)
|
ANSWER: Finding the index entry, 2. Finding the cigar band, 1. Reading the plaque, 2. Finding the little key, 2. Getting into the Film Room, 2. Winning over Ledoux, 3. Lighting the reader, 2. Finding the right reel, 2. Making the print, 3. Getting it certified, 3. Showing Mrs. Bevis the evidence, 3. That's 25.

Still stuck after all that? Write me and tell me what you typed. If the game didn't understand a sensible command, that's my bug, not your fault, and I want to know about it.
