The Launch Games
first impressions, scored out of 10
Launch Diary  |  The Games (scored)  |  Soul Calibur

These are the launch games that me or my friends own or rented in the first two weeks. Nobody can afford all of them, so we pass them around. Who owns what is next to each one. These are FIRST impressions, so if I change my mind I'll change the score.

How I score: 10 = I would buy this again right now. 7 = good, rent it first. 5 = meh. Below 5 = I haven't given one yet, because they've all been good, which is kind of the point.

Soul Calibur   10/10
mine (thanks Dad)

The best-looking game I have ever seen and the best fighting game I have ever played. The arenas look real. The characters move like real people (except Voldo, who moves like nothing on earth). It's got weapons, so every character fights totally different. There's a ton to unlock. It's so good it has its own page.

NFL 2K   9/10
Jesse's

My dad walked in while Jesse was playing and asked what game was on. He thought it was TV. That's the review. The players look like the real players, the announcers actually talk about what's going on in the game instead of saying the same five things, and four people can play. We played two on two and it was the most yelling that has ever happened in my room. Minus one point because the computer defense intercepts me way too much, which is probably my fault.

Sonic Adventure   8/10
Rickey's

When it's fast, it's the most amazing thing ever. The first level, at the beach, where the killer whale chases you down the boardwalk, made everybody in the room yell. You can play as six different characters, and each one has their own story: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big the Cat, and a robot named E-102 Gamma. Sonic and Tails are great. Knuckles is OK (you dig around looking for pieces of the Master Emerald). Big the Cat goes FISHING. A whole story where you fish. Rickey says it's "relaxing." Minus some points for the camera, which sometimes looks at a wall instead of at Sonic, right when you need to see Sonic. Plus some points for the Chao (see my VMU entry).

Power Stone   8/10
Manuel's

A fighting game, but in 3D rooms where you can pick up the chairs and tables and throw them at the other guy, and climb on stuff, and swing on poles. Gems called Power Stones show up during the fight, and if you get three of them you turn into a super version of your guy for a little while and do huge moves. Then everybody runs away from you. Only two players, which is the only bad thing. Manuel is Falcon (the pilot) and he can't be beaten. I've tried.

Ready 2 Rumble Boxing   8/10
Jesse rented it

Cartoon boxing. The boxers are all crazy characters. Afro Thunder is the best one and everybody wants to be him. Michael Buffer, the real boxing announcer guy, does the announcing before the fights. When you land punches you earn letters that spell RUMBLE, and when you've got them you can go into Rumble mode and go nuts. It's not deep. It's really fun for about an hour at a time, which is perfect for when people are over.

Hydro Thunder   7/10
Jesse rented it (same weekend)

Boat racing from the arcade. The boats are ridiculously fast and you get boost by running over the boost icons in the water, and there are ramps and shortcuts everywhere. The water looks really good. It's great for a while. It's not a game I'd play every day like Soul Calibur. Rent it for a weekend. Find the shortcuts. Give it back.

The House of the Dead 2   7/10
Dana rented it

You're two agents, James and Gary, and you shoot zombies through a city that's built on canals, like Venice. It's a gun game but none of us has a light gun, so we played with the controller, which works fine, you just move a crosshair around. The zombies are gross in a good way. The voice acting is SO bad that it's actually the best part. Dana does all the voices now. I give it 7 for the game and an extra point for the voice acting, minus one point because it's short.

THE LIST, best to worst (but they're all good):
1. Soul Calibur - 10
2. NFL 2K - 9
3. Sonic Adventure - 8
4. Power Stone - 8
5. Ready 2 Rumble Boxing - 8
6. Hydro Thunder - 7
7. The House of the Dead 2 - 7

What I want next: whatever Manuel's getting for his birthday so I can borrow it.
