spring 1999

March rain, then March rain,
then a little bit of sun,
then March rain again

·

cherry trees in bloom
petals ride in on the coats
of sleepy students

·

the first warm morning
twenty windows sliding down
like birds taking off

·

baby in a sling
watching the bell cord like it
owes her a secret

·

dandelions bloom
up through the cracks at the stop
marked no standing here

·

Easter Sunday run
a little girl in white shoes
checks them at each stop

·

someone got on with
an armful of wet lilac —
the whole bus in bloom

·

the new driver asks
how I stay calm. I tell him:
count to seventeen
