the longest day, and
still some light at the end of
the ten-fifteen run

·

windows open wide
the whole bus smells like someone's
flat of strawberries

·

the Fourth of July
fireworks going off early
one block at a time

·

eighty-five degrees
the whole city complaining
like it was a storm

·

a boy with a kite
folded up under his arm
like a sleeping bird

·

at the layover
a crow and I split the crust
of my egg sandwich

·

someone's grandmother
tells me the whole story of
her hip, stop by stop

·

Blue Angels roaring —
thirty faces pressed against
the bus window glass

·

ferry horn at dusk
a tourist asks me the way
to the water's edge

·

late sun on the bridge
a thousand windshields go gold
for one long red light

·

sun shower downtown —
the old man at Third and Pine
tips his hat to it
