STRIP #1  ·  Friday, September 3, 1999
THURSDAY NIGHT ANIME CLUB #1, Friday 9/3/99. Panel 1: Rudy bursts through the club-room door holding a videotape high over his head, with sparkles around it. RUDY: Fourth-generation fansub! Straight from a guy in Ohio! Panel 2: On the couch, Mindy leans toward Christa, who sits with her arms crossed. MINDY: Is fourth-generation good? CHRISTA: It means it's been copied four times. Panel 3: All three crowd in front of the old TV on its rolling cart, squinting at a snowy, blurry picture. RUDY: See? You can almost read the subtitles. Panel 4: A close-up of Mindy squinting hard, a sweat drop on her head. MINDY: I think she just said potato.

Mindy says: My very first meeting and my very first strip. The guy in Ohio is real; I've seen the envelope. I still don't know what she said.

STRIP #2  ·  Friday, September 10, 1999
THURSDAY NIGHT ANIME CLUB #2, Friday 9/10/99. Panel 1: Christa and Rudy glare at each other nose to nose, a lightning bolt between their eyes. CHRISTA: Subtitles. The original voices. The true art. RUDY: Dubs. So you can actually watch the fight scenes. Panel 2: Mindy sits on the couch between them with a bowl of popcorn, smiling nervously, a sweat drop on her head. MINDY: I... like both? Panel 3: Christa and Rudy both turn on her at once with huge fierce faces and flames behind them while she shrinks into the couch. CHRISTA AND RUDY: You can't like both!! Panel 4: A tiny Mindy sits alone on the long couch eating popcorn, pop, pop, while the other two argue far off in the background. MINDY: This club has a lot of rules.

Mindy says: The club spent one whole Thursday on subs versus dubs and never got a tape in the VCR. The flames took me a whole evening. The tiny me in the last panel was the most fun I've ever had with a brush pen.

STRIP #3  ·  Friday, September 17, 1999
THURSDAY NIGHT ANIME CLUB #3, Friday 9/17/99. Panel 1: Mindy kneels in front of the VCR under the TV cart, pointing in alarm at a long tangle of videotape spilling out of it. MINDY: Um. The VCR is eating it. Panel 2: Rudy strikes a pose, his long coat flaring, holding out a pencil like a sword. RUDY: Stand back. I've done this before. Panel 3: Rudy hunches over the cassette, sweating, winding the loose tape back in with the pencil while Mindy and Christa watch over his shoulder. CHRISTA: Nobody breathe. Panel 4: Rudy holds up a tape in triumph and Mindy cheers. RUDY: Saved! Christa, at the edge of the panel, looks unimpressed. CHRISTA: ...That's the wrong tape.

Mindy says: The pencil trick is real. Christa's last line is word for word. I inked all that loose tape one squiggle at a time, and I may never draw spaghetti again.

STRIP #4  ·  Friday, September 24, 1999
THURSDAY NIGHT ANIME CLUB #4, Friday 9/24/99. Panel 1: Rudy leans over a road map spread out on the coffee table, one finger on it. RUDY: The convention is in five weeks. Who's driving? Panel 2: Rudy and Christa both point straight at Mindy, who looks startled. RUDY AND CHRISTA: The freshman with the car. Panel 3: Mindy, sweating, holds up one finger to bargain while Christa tilts her head. MINDY: I'll drive if I can wear my costume. CHRISTA: As who? Panel 4: Mindy proudly holds up her sketchbook, open to a drawing of a girl in a long cape holding a staff with a star on top, while Rudy wipes away a tear behind her. MINDY: My own character! I designed her myself. RUDY: Our little freshman is all grown up.

Mindy says: The road trip, and my costume. She still doesn't have a name, and Rudy is still saying he didn't cry.
