The Library of the Ember Temple
You are standing in a long, quiet room lined with shelves of scrolls. A warm glow comes from the great brazier in the temple next door, and the smell of old paper hangs in the air. A small sign on the nearest shelf reads, in careful handwriting, "HELP FILES. PLEASE RETURN WHAT YOU BORROW." A gray-robed Immortal sits at a desk here, sorting scrolls and pretending not to notice you.
[Exits: south west]
Sable the Keeper of Scrolls is here, writing something.

<120hp 86m 110mv> say hello?

Hello! Welcome.

I'm Sable, one of the Immortals on Emberfall, a text MUD that's been running since the fall of 1995. Our help files inside the game are thorough, but they're scattered, a little cranky in places (some of them were written at 3 AM in 1996), and you can't read them before you've made a character. So I put the important ones here, where new players can read them first, and old players can send links to people who keep asking the same thing on the gossip channel.

WHAT IS A MUD?
A MUD is a game you play entirely in text, with a lot of other people at once, over the Internet. There are no graphics. The game describes a room, you type what you want to do, and the world answers. You fight monsters, gain levels, explore areas people built by hand, and talk to other players who are sitting at keyboards all over the world. If you've played an old text adventure, it's like that, except it never ends and everyone else is in it too.

ABOUT EMBERFALL
Emberfall runs on ROM 2.4, so if you've played another ROM mud, most of the commands will be familiar. We have over ninety areas, four classes, four player races, clans, and a small but friendly crowd: fifteen or twenty on a weekday afternoon, forty-some on a good night. Roleplaying is encouraged but not required. Hack-and-slash is fine. Being rude is not.

HOW TO CONNECT
You'll need a telnet program. The one that comes with Windows works, but a real MUD client is much nicer: zMUD on Windows is what most of our players use, and TinTin++ is popular on Unix machines. Our address and port number are listed on The Mud Connector, or e-mail me and I'll send them. (Our server lives in a university building and we'd rather it didn't show up on every web page in the world.)

WHO'S WHO
Varek is our Implementor. He wrote a lot of the code changes, pays for nothing because the server is in his office, and has the final word on everything.
Tamsin and Orrin are builders. Tamsin made the Sunken Bells and most of the sea areas. Orrin made the Goblin Warrens and apologizes for them often.
Sable (me) built the Ashen Wood, answers the question channel when I'm on, and keeps the help files.

Out here in the real world I'm Katrin Dupont. I work in a hospital lab in Michigan, and I've been mudding since 1994, when a friend in my dorm showed me how to telnet out of the campus computer lab and I lost most of my sophomore spring. I got my immortal flag in 1997. It's the only promotion I've ever cried about.

ROM 2.4 is the work of its authors and the Merc and Diku teams before them. The words on this page are mine.
