<120hp 86m 110mv> help newbie

NEWBIE
Welcome to Emberfall. Here is your first hour, in order:

1. Make your character (see CREATION below). Don't agonize. You can always make another.
2. Go through Mud School. It's south of the temple and it's short. It teaches you the commands by making you use them, and you'll come out a couple of levels higher with some basic equipment.
3. Type score and read it. Then type help and read the list.
4. Ask questions on the question channel. Somebody will answer. If nobody does, it's probably late and we're asleep.
5. When you're done for the night, type quit. Don't just close the window. There's no rent on Emberfall, so you keep everything when you quit properly.

<120hp 86m 110mv> help creation

CREATION
You'll pick a race and a class.

Races: Humans are average at everything and level fastest. Elves are clever and quick but not sturdy. Dwarves are tough and see in the dark. Giants are enormously strong and not very bright, which is more fun to play than it sounds.

Classes: Warriors hit things. Clerics heal, and hit things with maces. Mages cast spells and fall down a lot at low levels, then become terrifying. Thieves sneak, steal and backstab. For a first character I recommend a warrior or a cleric.

Customizing: the game will ask if you want to customize your skills. If this is your first ROM mud, say no and take the defaults. Customizing lets you pick exactly which skill groups you get, but every extra group you take makes each level cost more experience, and new players almost always take too much.

<120hp 86m 110mv> help commands

COMMANDS (the ones you'll really use)

look (l) look around
n e s w u d move
exits list the exits
score your stats
inventory (i) what you carry
equipment (eq) what you wear
wear <item> put it on
get / drop pick up, put down
who who's on
save save now
recall go to the temple

Most commands can be shortened to their first few letters. Recalling in the middle of a fight will cost you some experience, so try to flee first.

<120hp 86m 110mv> help channels

CHANNELS
say talks to everyone in the room. tell <name> talks to one person anywhere, and reply answers the last tell you got. gossip is the main public channel. question and answer are for help. auction is for selling things. grats is for congratulating people on levels, and people do, every single time, which is one of my favorite things about this place.

To turn a channel off, type its name by itself. Type it again to turn it back on. If gossip is getting to be too much at 1 AM, this is your friend.

<120hp 86m 110mv> help combat

COMBAT
consider <monster> tells you roughly how tough something is compared to you. Use it every single time. If the answer suggests that Death is looking forward to meeting you, leave.
kill <monster> starts a fight.
flee tries to run out a random exit. It doesn't always work.
wimpy <number> makes you flee automatically when your hit points drop below that number. Set it. I mean it.
rest and sleep get your hit points and mana back faster. wake and stand get you back up. Don't sleep in a room with aggressive monsters.
Turn on autoloot and autogold and you'll pick up what monsters drop without having to think about it.

<120hp 86m 110mv> help death

DEATH
You will die. Everybody does. When you do, you lose some experience and wake up back at the temple with nothing on. Your equipment is still on your corpse, right where you died.

Go back and type get all corpse. Go soon, because corpses don't last forever. If whatever killed you is still standing next to it, bring a friend, or ask on the question channel. Somebody will usually help.

The Immortals do not replace equipment you lost because you died. Please don't ask. We feel bad saying no.

<120hp 86m 110mv> help areas

AREAS (a few good ones, by level)

 1-5 Mud School
 3-10 The Cinder Fields
10-20 The Ashen Wood
12-22 The Goblin Warrens
20-35 The Sunken Bells
25-40 The Salt Road
40-51 The Obsidian Spire

The Ashen Wood is mine. The wolves at the edge are easy. The thing in the burned chapel in the middle is not. Consider it first.

The Goblin Warrens are a maze. Orrin knows. Orrin is sorry. Bring a light and write down your turns.
