Diplomacy by electronic mail · Game No. 3, "Autumn Crisis"
Bulletin  ◆  Results by Season  ◆  The Press
NOW DUE: Spring 1903 orders, Sunday, September 26, 1999, 11:59 PM Central.
Winter 1902 adjustments are processed and posted on the results page. Germany, Italy and Austria each built one unit. Russia removed one.

Welcome. This is the official bulletin for Game No. 3 of the e-mail Diplomacy games I run. Seven players, seven Great Powers, one map of Europe in the spring of 1901, and no dice. If you don't know the game: every player writes orders for their armies and fleets in secret, the Gamemaster (that's me) reveals them all at once and works out what happens, and in between, the players negotiate, make promises, and break them. The first power to hold 18 of the 34 supply centers wins. Most games end in a draw, because by then everyone has learned not to trust anyone.

About your Gamemaster. Howard Green. I teach civics at a high school in Iowa, which I'm told is funny given the hobby. I learned Diplomacy in 1968 from my older brother, who stabbed me in the fall of 1901 and has never apologized. I played by post through the zines in the seventies and eighties, and I've been running games by e-mail since 1997. There are computer judges out there that will adjudicate a game automatically, and they're very good, but I like writing up the results myself. It's the best part of the week.

House Rules

  1. Deadlines. Movement orders are due Sundays at 11:59 PM Central. Retreats and winter adjustments are due the following Wednesday at the same time. Results go out by e-mail Monday night and Thursday night, and on this page soon after.
  2. Orders go to me by e-mail, with your power and the season in the subject line. You may send new orders as often as you like before the deadline. The last one I receive counts.
  3. Missed orders. If I don't hear from you, your units hold and you don't retreat or build. Miss two turns in a row and I'll look for a replacement player.
  4. Holidays. Any player may ask for one extension a year, for a real reason, at least two days ahead. I'll also extend on national holidays.
  5. Press. Send it to me and I'll publish it on the press page. White press is signed by your country. Grey press is anonymous. No black press: nobody may sign a release as somebody else.
  6. Private diplomacy is between players and is none of my business. Say anything you want. Promise anything you want. That's the game.
  7. My rulings follow the 1982 Rulebook. If you think I've made an error, write within 24 hours of results and I'll look again, and publish the correction if I was wrong. I have been wrong. It's in the archives.

Standby list
If you'd like to be a replacement player for this game, or sign up for Game No. 4 (starting when this one ends, or around New Year's, whichever comes first), write to me at [email protected]. You'll need to be able to check your e-mail at least twice a week and to lose gracefully.
