Hi and Welcome!!

My name is Donna and I live in Dayton, Ohio with my husband Rick and our FOUR cats. (Rick says he is number five on the list around here and he is probably right, LOL!) I have always loved cats ever since I was a little girl, and when my nephew showed me how to make a home page on GeoCities.us I knew right away what it had to be about.

This page is dedicated to the one and only Mr. Whiskers, who is in charge of this house and everyone in it. He even has his own diary on here now. Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee and stay a while. And if you have a kitty of your own, please sign my guestbook and tell me all about them!

Meet the Cats

Mr. Whiskers Mr. Whiskers
Orange tabby, age 9. THE BOSS.
I found him in our garage in the spring of 1990 when he was a teeny tiny kitten no bigger than my hand, crying his little head off behind the lawn mower. He has been running the place ever since. He loves tuna more than anything in the world, and his favorite nap spot is right on top of the TV set because it's nice and warm. (Yes, his tail hangs down over the screen. Yes, we have learned to live with it.)
Pumpkin Pumpkin
Calico, age 4. The loud one.
Pumpkin has an opinion about everything and she wants you to hear it. She talks when she's hungry, she talks when she's happy, and she talks at 5:30 in the morning for no reason at all. She is also a hair tie thief. If you come over, hold on to your ponytail holder!
Shadow Shadow
All black, age 6. The shy one.
Shadow is the sweetest boy you will ever meet... if you ever get to meet him. The minute the doorbell rings he is under our bed and he doesn't come out until the company goes home. But at night he curls up right next to my pillow and purrs like a motorboat.
Miss Kitty Miss Kitty New!
Gray kitten, about 5 months. The baby.
Our newest family member! We adopted Miss Kitty from the county humane society in June 1999. She was the littlest one in the kitten room and she reached right through the cage and grabbed my sleeve, so that was that. She attacks shoelaces, especially when they are still on your feet. Mr. Whiskers is still deciding how he feels about her.

I don't have a scanner yet, so the real pictures will have to wait. Just imagine this little guy times four!

Mr. Whiskers' Diary New!
written by Mr. Whiskers himself

August 2, 1999
Dear Diary. It is very hot. I have taken my usual spot on top of the TV. The Man was trying to watch the baseball game and asked me to move my tail. I did not move my tail. I am the boss.

August 14, 1999
The small gray one (they call her Miss Kitty) attacked the Man's shoelaces again today. While he was WEARING the shoes. While he was carrying the groceries. I watched the whole thing from the back of the couch. Ten out of ten. I may let her stay.

August 27, 1999
I heard the can opener. I ran from the far end of the house to the kitchen in two seconds flat. It was GREEN BEANS. I have never been so insulted in my life. I will be sitting on the clean towels in the laundry basket if anyone needs me.

September 1, 1999
The Lady was jumping up and down in front of the computer. She says my page is the Homepage of the Month. MY page. Lots of people will be reading my diary now, so I have one thing to say to all my fans: tuna. Please send tuna.

September 9, 1999
The Lady says today is 9-9-99 and some computers might get confused. I am never confused. I know exactly when it is breakfast time, and I tell everybody at 5:00 a.m., no matter what the date is.

September 18, 1999
Aunt Carol came over. Shadow hid under the bed for three hours. I do not understand this. Aunt Carol has a lap. Aunt Carol brought ham.

September 23, 1999
The Lady moved the refrigerator to clean behind it. Under there she found 14 hair ties, 3 milk jug rings, a bottle cap, a jingle ball and one very old French fry. Pumpkin says the hair ties are hers. I have no comment on the French fry.

Purrs and head bumps,
Mr. W.

Cat Care Tips
Things I have learned in 20+ years of living with cats. I'm not a vet, so when in doubt, call yours!

  • Hairballs. Brush your cat a few times a week, especially long-haired cats and during shedding season. Every bit of loose fur you brush out is fur they don't swallow. Hairball formula food or a hairball remedy from the pet store or vet can help too. BUT if your cat keeps gagging and nothing comes up, stops eating, or can't go in the litter box, call the vet right away. That can mean a blockage.

  • Keep Kitty Indoors. All four of mine are indoor cats. Indoor cats are safe from cars, dogs, fights with other cats, fleas and ticks, and diseases like feline leukemia (FeLV) and FIV. A window perch, a scratching post and a few toys will keep them happy. Mr. Whiskers watches the birds at our feeder from the living room window and he is perfectly content (well, mostly).

  • Spay and Neuter! A female kitten can go into heat when she's only 5 or 6 months old, sometimes even younger. There are already so many homeless kitties at the shelters. Spaying also protects girls from uterine infections and lowers the chance of breast cancer, and neutered boys are much less likely to spray, roam and fight. Miss Kitty goes in for her spay in October. (The humane society gave us a certificate for it when we adopted her!)

  • No Cow's Milk. I know, cats and a saucer of milk look so cute in the cartoons. But most grown-up cats can't digest the sugar in milk (lactose) very well and it can give them an upset tummy and diarrhea. Fresh, clean water every day is all they need.

  • Watch Out for Poisons. Never give your cat Tylenol or any people medicine unless your vet says so. Acetaminophen is deadly to cats, even a little bit. Antifreeze is sweet and cats (and dogs) will lick it up, and it's very poisonous, so wipe up any drips in the garage. And lilies (like Easter lilies) are very dangerous to cats, even just nibbling a leaf.

  • Litter Box Manners. Scoop every day! Cats are very clean and a lot of "accidents" happen just because the box is too dirty. If a cat who always used the box suddenly stops, take them to the vet, because it can be a sign of a bladder problem.

  • Yearly Checkups. Take your kitty to the vet once a year for a checkup and to keep their shots up to date. Cats are very good at hiding when they don't feel well, so the vet can catch things you might miss.

Cat Jokes!
(Rick says these are terrible. I say they are purr-fect.)

Q: Why did the cat sit on the computer?
A: To keep an eye on the mouse!

Q: What is a cat's favorite color?
A: Purr-ple! (That's why this page is purple!)

Q: What do cats eat for breakfast?
A: Mice Krispies!

Q: Why don't cats play poker in the jungle?
A: Too many cheetahs!

Q: What do you call a pile of kittens?
A: A meow-ntain!
