What's the Backroads WebRing?

It's a ring of home pages for people who'd rather take the long way. Road trips, camping, hiking, fishing, surfing, old cars and new ones, the desert, the mountains, the beach, the diner at the crossroads. If your page is about going somewhere, or about the thing that gets you there, it belongs here.

We (that's Hank and Peggy) started the ring in the spring of 1999. We'd been on the road in our van for two years and kept finding pages by folks doing the same kind of thing: a family driving to Hawaii's volcanoes, a fella fixing up a Mustang, a young man surfing before work. We thought, these people ought to be able to find each other. So we asked Bob and Linda Henderson, who run the Front Porch WebRing, how it's done, and here we are.

How it works: Every member page has the Backroads WebRing box near the bottom. Click Next to go on down the road to the next site, Prev to turn around, or List Sites to come back here to the map. The ring is a loop, so after the last site you're back at the first, just like a good Sunday drive.

Member Sites
12 sites on the ring, in ring order. Start anywhere!

1 Desert Rats Off-Road Club
Rick & Tammy V. of Barstow, California and their club's four-wheeling trips in the Mojave. They showed us a road we never would have found.
2 Camp Cook Carl
Carl D. of Tucson, Arizona cooks over a campfire and tells you how. Peggy has his page bookmarked.
3 Project '67 Mustang
Dave R. of Flint, Michigan is bringing a 1967 Mustang back to life in his garage, one weekend at a time.
4 The Minivan Chronicles
Denise W., mom of four, on life behind the wheel of the family minivan. Any parent will recognize themselves.
5 Dawn Patrol: Surfing the Central Coast
Miguel A. surfs the California coast around Pismo Beach at sunrise and writes it up for the rest of us.
6 Hank & Peggy's Great American Road Trip
That's us. Two retirees, one 1995 conversion van, and the whole country one state at a time. Home of this ring.
7 Neon Nights: Old Signs of the Mother Road
Glenn F. photographs the old neon motel and diner signs still lit along Route 66, and tells you how to shoot them yourself.
8 The Corvette Diaries
Lou and Marie P. and their yellow 1972 Corvette Stingray: Sunday drives, cruise-ins, and keeping her shiny.
9 Our Hawaii Trip: Maui and the Big Island
The Nakamura-Reyes family's trip to Maui and the Big Island. The one road trip we can't do in Dolly.
10 Dayhikes with Dad
Mark P. and his daughter Emma, age 8, and the day hikes they take together. Start 'em young.
11 The Fly Fishing Journal
Nate S. keeps a journal of his days on the water with a fly rod. Hank says he's going to take it up. Hank has said this since 1981.
12 Sierra Peaks Log
Andrea L. is a peakbagger, which means she climbs mountains in the Sierra Nevada and keeps a list. We get winded reading it.

...and from number 12 the road loops right back around to number 1.

How to Join

Room for plenty more on the ring. Here's how:

  1. Have a page that fits. Road trips, travel, camping, hiking, fishing, surfing, cars, trucks, motorcycles, the outdoors, or the little towns and diners in between. Personal home pages, mostly, though a friendly small business that fits the theme is welcome too.
  2. Keep it family-friendly. Our grandkids read these pages. Nothing you wouldn't say in front of a nine-year-old or your mother-in-law. We look at every page before it goes on.
  3. E-mail the ringmasters at [email protected] with your page's title, its address (URL), your name, where you're from, and a line about what your page is about.
  4. Paste in the ring code. Once we've had a look, we'll send you back the ring code: the Backroads WebRing box, like the one at the bottom of this page, with your own Prev and Next links filled in. Paste it near the bottom of your page and you're on the ring. Please don't change the links, or the ring gets a flat.

Be patient with us, please. We answer e-mail whenever we find a library with a computer, which can be a week or two if we're out in the mountain states. We will get to you.
