>> WHO RUNS THIS

I'm Frank Crocker. Hotstick on the board. I climb poles for the power company for a living and I have run the Rusty Nail out of the spare room since March of 1991. Same 486 for most of that, a DX2/66 that's had more parts swapped in it than my pickup. Back in '93 and '94 we had four phone lines and a waiting list and you couldn't get on after supper. Then the Internet came to Billings and most of the callers went with it. I don't blame them.

But some of them stayed, and some of them came back, and the reason both times was the door games. So last year I put the board on telnet, kept one phone line for the old-timers, and now we've got people calling in from all over the country to play Legend of the Red Dragon and Trade Wars like it's 1993. Suits me fine.

This page is for the regulars and anybody who wants to be one. Game standings are on the door pages and I update them most Fridays.

BOARD NEWS
09/24/99 Standings updated on all three door pages. Congratulations to Bitterroot, our first dragon killer of the new LORD game. Took you 33 days. Took the dragon about four minutes.

09/20/99 New TW2002 corp rules posted on the Trade Wars page. Read them before you go making alliances.

09/12/99 Board was down Saturday night into Sunday. Not the computer, the power. A transformer let go two streets over. Guess who got called out to fix it. I came home at 5 a.m. and the board was the first thing I turned on.

08/30/99 Y2K: I set the clock ahead on a spare machine with a copy of the board on it and ran it past midnight on New Year's. The board software, the doors and the mailer all came through, except one old door that showed the year as 19100 on its news screen. Cosmetic. I can live with it. If anything goes wrong on January 1, I'll be at work anyway, because so will every lineman in America.

08/02/99 New LORD game started. Old one ran 14 months and Grimwald won it so many times nobody else wanted to play.

HOW TO CALL IN
BY TELNET (nodes 1-3)
You need a telnet program that does ANSI color. The telnet that comes with Windows will connect, but the screens look like garbage without the colors and the line-drawing characters. HyperTerminal in Windows 98 can do it. Most of the regulars use NetTerm, which is shareware.

I don't put the address on this page. The last time I posted it on a web page, somebody's program sat there all night trying to log in as SYSOP over and over. So e-mail me and I'll send you the address and a note about how to set up.

BY MODEM (node 4)
One phone line, 28.8, here in Billings. E-mail me for the number. It's a local call for about forty people now and long distance for everybody else, so unless you're one of the forty, use telnet.

NEW USERS
Log in as NEW, fill out the application, and I'll validate you within a day or two. Real first name and a real city on the application. Nobody but me sees it. Pick a handle for everything else.

THE RULES
1. One account per person. I can tell. I have been doing this for eight years and I can tell.

2. No multi-noding the doors. Don't log on two nodes at once to play the same game twice in a day, or to feed one character money from another. Get caught and both characters get deleted and you get a talking-to.

3. 90 minutes a day per account. If nobody's waiting I don't care, but don't sit on a node all night idle.

4. Keep it clean in the public message bases. Say what you'd say at the diner. Private mail is private, I don't read it, but if somebody complains about what you sent them, I'll deal with it.

5. No arguing with the sysop about game settings in public. E-mail me. I might even change it.

6. If the board's down, it's probably the weather. Wait a day. It always comes back.

>> ELSEWHERE

A few of the old callers went over to MUDs once they got on the Internet, which are text games too, just with hundreds of people instead of one at a time. One of them plays on a friendly one called Emberfall and says the people who run it have put their help files on a web page for new players, here: Emberfall MUD Help Files. Tell them a lineman sent you.
