When I was on the radio, the station printed a survey every week, a little card
with the top songs on it, and people picked them up at the record store and kept
them in shoeboxes. This is my survey. Twelve picks so far, one a week, every one
still worth a visit. Where a page has its own little button, I've put it up.

THE PICK |
| 12 |
Week of Sept. 26 · Orchard
Giant Pumpkin Growing
Hank in Ohio and Walter, the 480-pound pumpkin under the bedsheet. Weigh-off next
Saturday. The full write-up is on this week's page.

| 11 |
Week of Sept. 19 · Petsburgh
Mr. Whiskers' Cat Emporium
Donna in Dayton, her husband, and the four cats who run the house, starting with
Mr. Whiskers, who keeps his own diary. Friendly as a kitchen table. Homepage of the
Month for September, too.

Week of Sept. 12 · CapeCanaveral
The Paper Airplane Laboratory
A dad and his daughter, a gym a little over ninety feet long, and a green spiral
notebook of records. Six planes with folding steps, and Ellie's commentary, which is
the best part. |
| 9 |
Week of Sept. 5 · Eureka
The Lemonade Stand Ledger
Maya, 12, ran a lemonade stand every weekend all summer and kept the books. 631
cups, one rainy weekend in the red, and a net profit of $187.40, checked twice by
her and once by her dad. |

Week of Aug. 29 · MadisonAvenue
Jingles I Can't Get Out of My Head
Ted makes the commercials for a group of radio stations, and he's written a love
letter to the singing commercial. I carted up a lot of those in my day. He's right
about all of it, especially the part about three notes being enough. |

Week of Aug. 22 · TimesSquare
The Chess Corner
My own neighborhood. Norman keeps the score sheets and the coffee money for a small
club that meets Monday nights at the library, and the honor-system coffee tin has
never come up short in eleven years. That's the whole page in one sentence, and it's
a good one.

Week of Aug. 15 · Route66
Neon Nights: Old Signs of the Mother Road
Glenn has been photographing the old motel and diner signs along Route 66 since a
night in Kingman in 1996. His log includes the dark signs too, and marks the ones
that have since come down. Read it slowly. |
| 5 |
Week of Aug. 8 · Hollywood
The B-Movie Bunker
Vince, a basement, a VCR and two hundred tapes of the worst movies ever made,
rated on a skull scale where more skulls is better. I laughed out loud at work
and had to pretend it was a truck schedule. |
| 4 |
Week of Aug. 1 · NapaValley
Sourdough Sam
Sam in Portland has kept the same sourdough starter alive since March of 1994. It
started in a mayonnaise jar and its name is Gus. Clear, patient instructions for the
rest of us.

| 3 |
Week of July 25 · Eureka
Clockwork: Repairing Old Clocks
Ernest is a retired tool-and-die maker who has brought more than forty old clocks
back to life in his basement. He warns you off household oil before anything else,
and he means it. |
| 2 |
Week of July 18 · CapeCanaveral
Skywatch: Satellites You Can See
Priya, a physics grad student, shows you how to watch a space station go over your
house with nothing but your eyes and a watch. I went out in the driveway the same
night. It works. |
| 1 |
Week of July 11 · TheTropics
The Reef Tank Page
The first pick. Brian started a 55-gallon saltwater reef tank in January and wrote
down everything, with numbers, including his mistakes. He asks you to read the
mistakes first. Do what he says.
