May 1999!
Welcome!

Hi there, and thanks for stopping by! I'm Linda, and I made this page all by myself, learning HTML from a library book. (I have renewed that book three times now, so I'd better learn fast!) If something on here looks a little funny, that's why. We got our computer in the spring of 1998, and Bob finally let me get a 56K modem this year, and I have been having a ball ever since. Bob says I'm on the computer more than the kids are. He might be right.

We put this page together so all our family and friends, near and far, can keep up with what the Hendersons are up to. (Aunt Marlene in Arizona, this means you!) So pull up a lawn chair, pour yourself some iced tea and sit a spell.

Meet the Family

Bob
Dad
Bob works in the parts department at the farm implement dealership in town, so if your tractor or combine needs a part, he's your man. Thursday nights are bowling league night, and he would like everyone to know his team is in second place. He also fixes anything that breaks around here, which is mostly the fence (see Buster, below).
Linda
Mom
That's me! I'm a nurse at the county hospital. When I'm not at work or driving kids to band practice and Scouts, I'm out in the garden or in here typing away at this page. I'm the family webmaster (ha!), learning as I go from my library book.
Emily
age 12
Emily is in 7th grade this year and plays the clarinet in the band. She's in 4-H, and this July she showed her Mini Rex rabbit, Snickers, at the county fair and won a blue ribbon! We are so proud of her. She wants me to tell you she did all the work herself, and she did.
Tyler
age 9
Tyler is in 4th grade and is absolutely crazy about Pokemon cards. He can tell you every single one he has and every single one he doesn't have (mostly Charizard). He just started Webelos in Cub Scouts, and he's already planning his car for next winter's Pinewood Derby.
Buster
beagle, age 5
Buster is the sweetest dog in Iowa and also the sneakiest. He is a beagle, so once his nose picks up a smell, off he goes, right under the fence. Bob has filled in the hole four times this summer. Score so far: Buster 4, Bob 0. The neighbors all know him by name and usually call us before we even notice he's gone.

Family News

New! September 1999 — Back to School!
The kids climbed on the school bus at the end of August, and just like that summer was over. Emily started 7th grade and is playing clarinet in the junior high band now. Her first concert is in October. Tyler is in 4th grade and has a teacher he says is "pretty cool," which from Tyler is high praise. Harvest is getting going around here, so Bob is putting in long days at the dealership getting parts to everybody who needs them. He has also started a "Y2K box" in the basement with flashlights, batteries and bottled water, just in case. The hospital has been testing everything all year, so I'm not too worried, but it doesn't hurt to be ready.

August 1999 — Henderson Family Reunion at Clear Lake
What a weekend! About 40 Hendersons came to Clear Lake from all over, some of them from as far away as Colorado and Minnesota. We had the shelter house at the park for the big potluck on Saturday, and Grandma Ruth's apple crisp was gone in twenty minutes flat (the recipe is in Grandma Ruth's Kitchen!). The kids swam all day, the cousins played softball, and Tyler caught his very first fish off the dock. Bob says it was a little bluegill. Tyler says it was HUGE. We drove past the Surf Ballroom on the way out of town, where Grandma Ruth and Grandpa used to go dancing when they were young. Next reunion is in 2001, and Bob's brother Dennis says it's his turn to host.

July 1999 — County Fair
Emily's big week! She has been working with her rabbit Snickers since spring, and all that practice paid off with a blue ribbon in the 4-H rabbit show. She was so nervous she about shook the whole time, but you'd never know it. Tyler ate more corn dogs and lemonade shake-ups than I care to count and rode the Scrambler until he turned green. A great week.

Grandma Ruth's Kitchen

Grandma Ruth (that's Bob's mom) has been feeding this family for over fifty years, and nobody leaves her table hungry. She has never measured a thing in her life, so this summer I stood right next to her in her kitchen with a measuring cup and a notepad and wrote it all down as she went. She finally said I could put a few of her recipes on the Internet, "as long as nobody at church says theirs is better."

Come on in and try her Apple Crisp, Sunday Pot Roast, Rhubarb Bars and Scalloped Corn!

UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

We have three rolls of film from the fair, the reunion and the first day of school, and they are all still at the drugstore in town waiting to be developed. Once we get them back, my sister Karen said we could borrow her scanner. Then you'll finally get to see Snickers and her blue ribbon, the whole Henderson clan at Clear Lake, and Tyler's "huge" fish. Check back soon!

The Front Porch WebRing

Front Porch WebRing

Bob and I run the Front Porch WebRing, a ring of friendly, family-style personal home pages. We started it in 1998, and now there are 8 homes on the ring, with cats, birds, UFOs, movies, computers, a Little League team and a 7th grade science class. Our own Donna K.'s Mr. Whiskers' Cat Emporium is the GeoCities.us Homepage of the Month for September. Way to go, Donna!
