WHO WE ARE I'm OGF|Sarge. I drive a bakery delivery route in Pittsburgh. I'm up at 3:30 every morning loading bread and I'm done by early afternoon, which means I get home before everybody else in this clan and sit on the server alone waiting for them. Somebody has to keep the flag warm. The Old Guard started in the spring of 1997 on Team Fortress for QuakeWorld. Four of us were on the same public server every night and kept ending up on the same team, so we put a tag on it. We've been somewhere between ten and twelve guys since early 1998. A few left, a few came in, the core stayed. We are not a famous clan. We don't win tournaments. We do play as a team, we show up when we say we will, and nobody on the other side ever has to wonder if we're cheating. Joining: e-mail me. You'll play two weeks of public games and a scrim or two wearing OGF?| in front of your name, then we vote. We're short a Pyro who can actually aim. |

THE MOVE: QUAKEWORLD TF VS. TF CLASSIC Team Fortress Classic came out free for Half-Life owners on April 7, 1999. We had the whole clan on it by that Sunday. Here's the honest report, five months in. |
| WHAT WE MISS old Team Fortress on QuakeWorld |
WHAT GOT BETTER Team Fortress Classic on Half-Life |
| The feel. QuakeWorld was made for guys on modems, and you could tell. Two years in, we could all play it in our sleep. TFC still feels a little floaty to the old-timers. Kaboomski says his pipes don't land where his hands expect them to. | The look. Every class used to be the same Quake guy in a different skin. Now the HWGuy looks like an HWGuy and you can tell a Medic from a Scout at a distance. That alone has saved our Engineers a lot of ammo. |
| The ping. Half the clan is still on 56K. The first couple of weeks in TFC were rough. People warping around, rockets hitting guys who were already gone. It's better now, but a QuakeWorld server with a 150 ping felt better than a TFC server with a 150 ping. We'll argue about that forever. | Finding a game. Half-Life lists the WON servers right in the menu. Click, sort by ping, go. We still keep our favorites list, but nobody has to hunt for an address in a text file anymore. |
| The old crowd. There were clans we scrimmed against every month for two years who never made the move. Some of them are still on QuakeWorld. A couple just quit. We miss beating them. We miss them beating us, a little. | The maps. 2fort and well are rebuilt, and they look great. They play close enough to the old ones that all our habits came with us. And rock2 and hunted have given us something new to fight about. |
| Knowing every inch. We knew where every grenade pack was on the old 2fort. It took us a month to stop running into walls where the old doorways used to be. | New blood. Everybody who bought Half-Life got TFC for nothing, so the servers are full of new players. Two of our twelve came to us that way, Ratchet and Flicker, and they're both good. |
| The verdict: we're staying. Ask us again after the next patch. | |
| CLAN RULES Same rules since 1997. Break one in a scrim and you sit out the next one. | |
|
1. NO SPAWN CAMPING. 2. NO TEAM KILLING. 3. ENGINEERS ANSWER TO THE DEFENSE CAPTAIN. |
4. NO CHEATS. NONE. 5. SHOW UP OR SAY SO. 6. WEAR THE TAG RIGHT. |
